Chess runs as team and individual competition at school, regional and state levels. JCPS has said its Office of Academic Competition coordinates chess leagues, but availability still varies by school.

What Chess is

  • Team and individual competition at the school, regional and state level.
  • League play may be coordinated beyond the building, which is why a school can have a team even without a tournament at home.

What Chess is not

  • Not the same as a lunch chess club with no rated play.
  • Casual play and a competition team are two different asks of a student's time.

Who runs it

A school sponsor coaches. League play may be coordinated beyond the building; the coach is still at the school.

Season and calendar

Fall through spring. Ask the sponsor which league the school plays in, because that decides how many Saturdays are involved.

How kids get on Chess

  • Ask whether the school has a competition team, a club, or both.
  • Ask how boards are chosen — top boards are usually earned, not assigned by grade.
  • Ask whether rated play or tournament travel is expected of everyone.

A teacher or school sponsor runs the group. The district may coordinate a league or showcase, but it does not staff the team. Not every JCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year — confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.

Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office, the counselor, or the teacher who runs the group. JCPS Insider does not keep a live sponsor list and cannot tell you who the coach is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, meeting time, or roster.

Questions to ask the school

  1. Is there a competition team here, a club, or both?
  2. What day does it meet?
  3. Is rated play or tournament travel expected?
  4. Are there fees for entry or membership?
  5. Which levels play here — elementary, middle or high?

Schools we have seen list Chess

This list is incomplete on purpose and is not a directory. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it.

Still verifying. Tell us which schools field a team — that link is for adding a school, not for asking who the coach is. Browse the schools directory or tell us what your school offers.
