Fall through spring

KUNA and KYA are the Kentucky United Nations Assembly and the Kentucky Youth Assembly — student government and diplomacy conferences where students write, debate and represent a school.

What KUNA / KYA is

  • Two conference programs: KUNA is the United Nations model, KYA is the youth assembly.
  • Students write proposals or bills, debate them, and represent their school at a conference.

What KUNA / KYA is not

  • Not Quick Recall.
  • Not student council by default, even though the two often share a sponsor.
  • Attending a conference and holding a named role are different things.

Who runs it

A school sponsor runs the delegation.

Season and calendar

Fall through spring, with conference dates set outside the school. Confirm the year's dates with the sponsor before you book anything around them.

How kids get on KUNA / KYA

  • Ask how students are selected and whether the delegation is capped.
  • Ask the cost, including the conference fee.
  • Ask whether overnight travel is part of it — for many schools it is.

A teacher or school sponsor runs the group. The district may coordinate a league or showcase, but it does not staff the team. Not every JCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year — confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.

Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office, the counselor, or the teacher who runs the group. JCPS Insider does not keep a live sponsor list and cannot tell you who the coach is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, meeting time, or roster.

Questions to ask the school

  1. Which program do you actually attend — KUNA, KYA, or both?
  2. How are delegates selected, and how many can go?
  3. What are the fees, and is there help with them?
  4. Is there overnight travel, and who chaperones?
  5. How are officers or bill authors chosen?

Schools we have seen list KUNA / KYA

This list is incomplete on purpose and is not a directory. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it.

Still verifying. Tell us which schools send a delegation — that link is for adding a school, not for asking who the sponsor is. Browse the schools directory or tell us what your school offers.
