Orchestra

Orchestra in JCPS is a strings program, not a smaller version of band. There is no marching season, the instrument path is different, and the calendar peaks in late winter instead of October.
What Orchestra is
What a school calls “orchestra” depends on what it can staff.
String orchestra
Violins, violas, cellos and basses. This is what most JCPS schools mean by orchestra.
Full orchestra
Strings plus winds, brass and percussion. Only some schools can staff a full orchestra.
Chamber or honors groups
Small auditioned ensembles — only if that director runs them.
What Orchestra is not
Not band. Not guitar class. And not “any kid with a violin case is concert-ready” — beginning strings and the top ensemble are completely different asks of a student.
Who runs it
The orchestra director at the school. KMEA runs the orchestra festivals and assessments and the All-State orchestra auditions. The district does not assign the director.
Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office or the director who runs the program. JCPS Insider does not keep a live director list and cannot tell you who the coach or director is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, rehearsal time, fee, audition date, or roster.
Year at a glance
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Start of year | Placement and seating; instrument rental sorted out. |
| Fall | Class plus an after-school rehearsal at some schools, then a fall concert. |
| Winter | Concert season, and solo & ensemble at some schools. |
| Late winter–spring | KMEA orchestra assessment or festival, plus the All-State track for students who audition. |
| Late spring | Final concert, and possibly pit strings for the musical. |
There is no October marching-championship weekend on the orchestra calendar.
By grade
- Elementary
- Beginning strings only where it is offered. Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts includes orchestra in the school day — that is an arts-pathway school, not the norm.
- Middle
- Orchestra as a class. Farnsley Middle materials have listed KMEA Distinguished for orchestra as well as band and choir.
- High
- Concert orchestra, with chamber or full orchestra at some schools. YPAS orchestra at duPont Manual is an auditioned magnet major.
Time and logistics
Usually lighter than marching band. Still ask about after-school rehearsals, concert nights and weekend festivals — and about hauling a cello or bass back and forth if the school has none to loan.
Money
Ask the director to price these separately: class or program fee, instrument rental versus an owned instrument, music, concert dress, and festival travel. Do not assume marching-band dollar figures apply here — they do not.
How Kentucky scores it
KMEA festival and assessment ratings, plus All-State orchestra auditions. Chair placement and years in the program are what matter later. “In orchestra” does not.
Who it tends to fit
Good fit
A kid willing to practice a string instrument several days a week, most weeks.
Think twice
Think twice if the family cannot rent or transport a cello or bass and the school has no instrument to loan.
How kids get on Orchestra
- Ask the front office for the orchestra director, then ask the director directly.
- Ask whether this is beginning strings or an auditioned ensemble before your child commits.
- Ask whether there is still space and a school instrument available this semester.
- Ask when seating auditions happen so your child can prepare.
Not every JCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year. Confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.
Questions to ask the director
- Is this beginning strings or an auditioned ensemble?
- Does the school have instruments to rent, especially cello and bass?
- Is orchestra a class, after school, or both?
- Do you go to KMEA assessment or festival this year?
- Is there a seating audition?
- What is the fee, and what does concert dress cost?
- Can a beginner start in this grade?
- Do strings play in the school musical pit?
Schools we have seen list Orchestra
This list is incomplete on purpose. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it. Confirm at the school.
Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts
Orchestra in the school day — an arts-pathway school, not the typical elementary.
Western Middle School for the Arts
Arts magnet with an audition — an arts-pathway school.
Farnsley Middle
KMEA Distinguished listed for orchestra.
J. Graham Brown School
Orchestra listed among campus activities.
duPont Manual / YPAS
Orchestra as an auditioned performing-arts major — an arts-pathway school.
Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office or the director who runs the program. JCPS Insider does not keep a live director list and cannot tell you who the coach or director is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, rehearsal time, fee, audition date, or roster.
What to do this week
Ask for the orchestra director. Ask whether they still have space and a school instrument for this semester.
