School theater has two doors, and parents keep missing the second one. Onstage roles get the attention, but the crew path is often easier to join and counts just as clearly later.
What Theater is
A school theater program usually breaks into these pieces.
Onstage
Plays and musicals, with named roles that get cast.
Technical theater and crew
Sets, lights, sound, costumes, props and stage management.
Theater class
A class in the school day — not the same thing as being cast in the musical.
What Theater is not
Not band. Not YPAS by default — a neighborhood school show is not the YPAS major. And “helped with the play” is not a role or a crew job.
Who runs it
The theater teacher or drama director at the school. Some schools also have a separate tech director. The district does not cast the show.
Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office or the director who runs the program. JCPS Insider does not keep a live director list and cannot tell you who the coach or director is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, rehearsal time, fee, audition date, or roster.
Year at a glance
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Early fall | Often a play or first production: auditions and crew sign-up. |
| Late fall | Performance weekend or weekends, then strike. |
| Winter | Musical auditions and rehearsals at schools that do a spring musical. |
| Spring | Musical performances, plus one-acts or class showcases at some schools. |
Confirm that school's actual production calendar. We do not invent titles or dates.
By grade
- Elementary
- Class performances and shows where the school has a program. Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts does full productions (Annie Jr. is one example on our school page) and has a black box theater — an arts-pathway school, not the norm.
- Middle
- A school play or musical if it is staffed. Western Middle School for the Arts is the arts-magnet path, not the typical middle school.
- High
- A fall play and a spring musical is the common pattern, not a rule. YPAS theatre and musical theatre at duPont Manual are auditioned magnet majors.
Time and logistics
After-school rehearsals that get later as opening night gets closer. Tech week is the heavy one. Ask pickup time and how many nights are required for cast versus crew — they are rarely the same.
Money
Ask about the activity fee, the show shirt, costume pieces the family has to provide, tech-week meals, and ticket prices for relatives. Marching-band fee figures do not belong on this page.
How it shows up later
A named role plus the show and year. Or a named crew job — stage manager, lead carpenter, board op — plus the show and year. Thespian troupe points only count if that school actually has a troupe, so ask instead of assuming.
Who it tends to fit
Good fit
Kids who want to perform, and kids who would rather build and run the show.
Think twice
Think twice if the family cannot do evening rehearsals for several weeks in a row.
How kids get on Theater
- Ask the front office for the theater or drama director, then contact the director.
- Ask the audition date — and whether a first-year student can realistically be cast.
- Ask whether crew sign-up is open, since crew usually does not require an audition.
- Ask which nights cast and crew are expected, especially tech week.
Not every JCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year. Confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.
Questions to ask the director
- Do you cast a fall play, a spring musical, or both this year?
- How do auditions work, and can a first-year student be cast?
- Is there a tech crew path that does not require auditioning for a role?
- What nights are rehearsals, and when is tech week?
- How does my child get home after rehearsal?
- What fees or costume costs should we expect?
- Is there a theater class separate from the production?
- Do you have a Thespian troupe?
Schools we have seen list Theater
This list is incomplete on purpose. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it. Confirm at the school.
Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts
Drama in the school day, a black box theater and school productions — an arts-pathway school.
Western Middle School for the Arts
Whole-school arts magnet with an application and audition — an arts-pathway school.
duPont Manual / YPAS
Theatre, musical theatre and design & production majors by audition — an arts-pathway school.
For neighborhood high schools, confirm the current director and whether they are actually producing a show this year.

What to do this week
Ask for the theater director. Ask the audition date and whether crew sign-up is already open. Families miss the musical because they wait for a poster in February.
