Central High Magnet Career Academy drew 766 school level magnet application counts in JCPS’s last published high school report, second only to Manual’s 1,152. Those are demand figures, not odds. Here is what Central actually offers, how admission works, and why bus eligibility still shapes the short list.
Central High Magnet Career Academy is not a backup plan for families who miss Manual.
In JCPS’s published Magnet and Program Applications data for 2025 to 2026, Central drew 766 school level application counts. Only duPont Manual was higher among the high schools shown in that report, at 1,152. Those figures measure demand. They are not acceptance rates, and JCPS still does not publish the unique applicant, seat, offer, and placement numbers parents would need to calculate odds.
Even with that limit, Central belongs on some families’ short lists for demand, career pathways, and bus eligibility. That is not a claim it matches Manual’s academic results.
What the 766 figure does and does not mean
JCPS Insider’s read of the district report treats the totals as school level application counts, not a clean headcount of unique children. Families may list up to two magnet schools or programs on one application, and the public high school table does not say whether each school total is first choice only or both choices combined.
Manual’s 1,152 also rolls five Manual magnets into one school number. Central’s 766 is a single campus total. Comparing the two without that caveat overstates how neatly the race lines up.
Among the six high schools in that 2025 to 2026 report, Central is clearly second. Butler Traditional follows at 286. Western, Male, and Brown trail further behind. Two other magnet high schools named in the current Choices guide, W.E.B. DuBois Academy and Grace James Academy of Excellence, do not appear in that application report, so the list is not a complete ranking of every magnet high school.
What Central actually offers
The current High School Choices guide describes Central as a magnet career academy with a competitive admission process that can include achievement test scores, grade point average, personal essays, and teacher recommendations. The same profile says Central has the second highest number of Governor’s Scholars in the district and is one of two Kentucky high schools to offer Montessori education.
Central’s Choices profile covers a pre college curriculum, career programs in Business, Law, STEM, Health Services, and Teaching and Learning, Advanced Placement including AP Capstone, dual credit through the University of Louisville, Jefferson Community and Technical College, and Morehead State University, Navy JROTC, and Montessori learning. Specialized offerings named in the guide include Cyber Engineering and STEM Innovation, Dental Assisting, Management Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Patient Care Technician and Pre Nursing, Pre Law, Pre Med, Teaching and Learning, and Veterinary Assistant.
Central’s own school site groups magnets under different menu labels: Business, Law and Government, Marketing, Medical and Health Services, Sports Medicine, STEM, Teaching and Learning, Veterinary Science, plus Montessori, ROTC, and Arts at Central. The Choices guide and the school site are both official. They do not use identical program names. Use both when you are matching a pathway to your child, and ask the school which label applies to the application you are filing.
Families chasing a performing arts or MST identity at Manual are shopping a different product. Families who want law, health careers, veterinary assisting, teaching pathways, cybersecurity, or Montessori inside a competitive high school campus are shopping Central’s list.
The Choices guide lists student enrollment at 1,245. The district’s 2025 to 2026 high school profiles put Central’s optimal capacity at 1,380 and October 1, 2025 enrollment at 1,240. The school phone is 502 485 8226. The campus address is 1130 W Chestnut Street, Louisville, KY 40203. The district profile lives under Central High Magnet Career Academy.
How admission and applications work
Central is a whole school magnet. Jefferson County residency is required for magnet schools and magnet programs. There is no sibling preference for magnet admissions, according to the Choices guide rules that apply across magnets.
Some magnet schools may ask for additional application materials beyond the district magnet form. The Choices guide says applications are considered incomplete if requested information is not submitted to the school. Central’s site carries a 2027/28 Application submenu pointing families into the process. Read the current school checklist before you hit submit.
For 2026 to 2027, the district application window ran November 3, 2025, through December 19, 2025, with acceptance notices described for April 2026. The next cycle for 2027 to 2028 is on JCPS Insider’s Dates and Deadlines page and parent calendar tracking as November 2, 2026, through December 18, 2026. On time applications are processed together after the deadline, not first come, first served. Waiting lists are not kept from year to year.
For process steps from the prior cycle, see Insider’s magnet applications guide. Do not invent an acceptance percentage from the 766 count. Without seats and offers, that math is fiction.
Transportation for Central is clearer than for Manual
For 2026 to 2027, JCPS lists all students attending Central High School and Western High School as eligible for district bus transportation. That is different from duPont Manual, Louisville Male, and Butler Traditional, where the published list limits eligibility to students who are directly certified for Free and Reduced Lunch.
The district also requires every family to complete the Transportation Verification form and choose bus rider, car rider, walker, or YMCA Childcare Enrichment Program. The final day listed to request bus transportation for the first day of school was June 8, 2026. Eligibility on paper still does not create a stop until verification and routing catch up.
Rules have changed more than once since 2024. A Central seat for a later year is not a promise that next year’s list will look identical. Confirm current eligibility on the district first day and transportation pages for the year you would enroll, and complete Transportation Verification if required.

How to put Central in a fair Manual conversation
Tour both if you can. Ask how recommendations, essays, and test records are used this cycle. Ask what extra materials Central wants. Ask about transportation for your address in the year you would enroll. Insider’s Dates and Deadlines page lists Showcase of Schools for October 24, 2026, ahead of the November window. Confirm time and location on the district calendar before you plan around it.
Office of School Choice is at 502 485 6250, 4309 Bishop Lane. Central’s main office is at 502 485 8226. Put Central on the 2027 to 2028 tour calendar before the November window opens, and verify the current Choices guide and school application checklist the week you apply.
