Your child is going to a friend's house after school and wants to ride their bus. JCPS allows transportation changes in some situations, but a parent note alone does not give a student permission to switch buses.

No. Your child should not simply follow a friend onto another JCPS bus after school.

JCPS says students are expected to ride their assigned buses and cannot switch buses without authorization from a principal or Transportation Services. If a student needs to get off somewhere other than the regular designated stop, the parent or guardian must request the change in writing and the principal must approve it.

A sleepover, an afternoon at a friend's house or another temporary plan may still be possible. But the school needs to approve the change first.

Your school may have its own procedure

JCPS publishes the district rule, but it does not give families one universal form or one deadline for temporary transportation changes. Individual schools tell parents how to submit those requests.

Field Elementary's current handbook tells families to make transportation changes as early as possible and to call the office no later than 3:30 p.m. If one student is going home with another, whether as a walker, car rider or bus rider, Field requires notes from the parents of both students and asks families to include telephone numbers so staff can verify the request.

Medora Elementary uses a simpler rule on its parent page. Any student going home in a way that differs from the normal routine must have written permission from a parent or guardian that is approved by the principal or a designee.

Those examples are a good reason to call your own school instead of assuming the procedure at another JCPS school will apply to your child.

If your child wants to ride home with a friend

Do not wait until buses are loading to sort it out.

  1. Contact the school office early. Ask how the school handles a temporary transportation change and when the request must be received.

  2. Give the school the information it requests. Include your child's name, the date of the change, where the child is supposed to go and a telephone number where you can be reached.

  3. Ask whether the other family must also send permission. Field requires confirmation from both families when one student is going home with another.

  4. Make sure the change was approved. Sending a note starts the request. It does not give the student automatic permission to board another bus. The other bus may already be full, or Transportation Services may not authorize that student on the route.

  5. Give your child a backup instruction. If the school has not confirmed the change by dismissal, the child should follow the normal dismissal plan and ride the assigned bus rather than trying to board the friend's bus.

What if Grandma is meeting the regular bus?

If the child stays on the assigned bus and gets off at the regular designated stop, that is different from requesting another bus or stop.

Kindergarten families should check whether an adult is required to meet their particular child.

Current JCPS transportation training materials say kindergarten students generally follow the same transportation guidelines as other elementary students. But the driver's route information must identify each kindergarten student and show whether an adult must meet that child at the stop.

So if Grandma, a babysitter or another adult will handle afternoon pickup for a kindergartener, confirm what is required for that child's route.

Parents who want another caregiver to track the regular bus can also share My Ride K 12 access with a trusted person. JCPS Insider's Complete JCPS Parent App and Login Guide for 2026 to 2027 explains how that sharing feature works.

What if it is the same bus but a different stop?

That still requires approval.

JCPS says a student may leave the bus only at the regular designated stop unless the parent or guardian requests a change in writing and the principal approves it.

That can matter when a child is supposed to get off near a grandparent's house, babysitter's home or another student's house.

The driver should not be expected to change the stop based only on what the student says that afternoon.

What about two parent households?

The public JCPS transportation page explains temporary bus and stop changes, but it does not provide a detailed districtwide procedure for students who regularly need different transportation depending on which parent they are staying with.

If that is your family's normal schedule, contact the school and Transportation Services instead of treating each afternoon as a separate last minute change.

They can tell you what transportation arrangement is actually authorized for the student.

Early Childhood has different rules

JCPS publishes stricter requirements for students receiving Early Childhood transportation.

Those students are picked up and dropped off at the same address. A parent, guardian or another authorized person who is at least 16 years old must be there to receive the child.

If an authorized person is not there, JCPS says the student will be returned to school.

Families using Early Childhood transportation should contact the school before changing the normal afternoon arrangement.

My Ride K 12 cannot approve the change

My Ride K 12 helps families track an assigned bus. It does not authorize a student to switch buses or stops.

A substitute vehicle operating the child's regular route is also different from the child choosing another route. JCPS Insider's guide to missing buses, wrong times and substitute buses in My Ride K 12 explains what parents can check when the bus shown in the app does not match what they expected.

Who should parents call?

For questions about bus routes or transportation changes, JCPS tells families to start with the child's school or call Student Transportation Services at 502 485 3470.

The district currently lists school year hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the main Transportation Office and 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. for bus compound offices. JCPS says a bus compound may sometimes be able to provide route information more quickly after the school day has started.

For a planned visit or sleepover, contact the school before dismissal, follow that school's procedure and do not tell your child to board another bus unless the change has actually been approved.
