JCPS counted 946 duPont Manual magnet applications in the latest published data. Applications for next year open November 2, but families can already choose recommenders, review current essay and portfolio requirements, and make sure they understand Manual's two step application.

JCPS counted 946 magnet applications to duPont Manual for the 2025 to 2026 school year.

Manual enrolled 1,918 students that year. That makes one year's application count equal to about 49 percent of the size of the entire school.

That is a useful measure of demand. It is not an acceptance rate.

JCPS does not publish a current schoolwide Manual acceptance rate or a public breakdown showing how many seats are available in each of Manual's five magnets. The 946 figure is an application count, not a count of students who were rejected, and it should not be turned into an unofficial admissions percentage.

What families do know is when the next competition starts.

Applications for the 2027 to 2028 school year open November 2, 2026, and close December 18, 2026. Manual recommendations are due January 5, 2027. JCPS also says applications submitted during the window are processed together rather than first come, first served.

And Manual requires more than the JCPS application.

Manual is a two step application

This is the part worth putting on the refrigerator.

First, families complete the JCPS Options and Magnet application.

JCPS then sends a confirmation email containing the student's personID. That number is needed to complete Manual's separate criteria application. Manual says both steps must be completed by December 18.

Submitting the district magnet application does not mean the Manual application is finished.

Manual's separate file is where students provide the essays, activities, recommendations and any magnet specific material required by the program they choose.

Manual is really five different magnet programs on one campus

Every Manual student belongs to one of five magnets: High School University, Journalism and Communication, Math Science Technology, Visual Arts, or the Youth Performing Arts School.

MST attracts students interested in math, science, engineering and technology. Journalism and Communication centers on writing, media and communication. HSU offers a broader college preparatory path. Visual Arts asks students to demonstrate artistic work. YPAS adds performing arts training and an audition.

Manual also enters this application season with considerable name recognition. JCPS announced in August that the 2026 U.S. News and World Report rankings placed Manual No. 1 among Kentucky public high schools and No. 65 nationally.

JCPS Insider has previously looked more closely at what sits behind those results, including Manual's selective admissions model, advanced coursework, attendance and student population. Read JCPS Insider's deeper look at Manual's national ranking

There is no GPA that guarantees a Manual seat

This is where parents can get themselves into trouble.

Manual does not publish one GPA, test score or attendance number and say that a student above it gets admitted.

The school's admissions site says applications are evaluated using achievement test scores, attendance, extracurricular involvement, grades, personal essays and recommendations. Manual also says the process is designed so admission is not based on a single criterion and that applications are reviewed by multiple evaluators.

So a parent asking, “What GPA does my child need for Manual?” is asking a reasonable question that does not have a simple public answer.

The requirements also change depending on the magnet.

HSU's current 2027 to 2028 application asks students to write up to 400 words about the school experiences that led them to apply. Applicants list six important activities and provide two recommendations, including one from a middle school teacher familiar with the student's academic performance.

MST asks students why they want MST instead of another Manual magnet, which Manual activities they hope to join, and either how they overcame a major academic challenge or how they responded to failure. MST requires recommendations from a math teacher and a science teacher.

Those are not interchangeable applications.

Journalism and Communication requires much more than an essay

J and C is one place where families should slow down and read every instruction.

The current 2027 to 2028 application requires a written portfolio essay of up to 750 words, an activities survey, two teacher recommendations, academic records and a performance task containing original work samples. Students can submit work in areas including photography, video, speech, podcasting, creative writing, journalism and other forms of communication.

There is also a strict originality rule.

Applicants must include a declaration that the work is their own and was not produced or edited by another person or by artificial intelligence. The J and C page says original work cannot be AI generated, suggested or corrected and cannot come from a template.

Manual's general admissions guidance is somewhat broader. It says students may use AI to organize ideas or check grammar, but AI cannot write application content. Because J and C publishes a stricter magnet specific rule, J and C applicants should follow the stricter instruction.

A parent helping an eighth grader “clean up” a portfolio could unintentionally cross that line.

What parents can do before November 2

There is not much a family can do in September to rewrite years of grades, test results or attendance.

There is plenty they can do to avoid preventable mistakes.

  1. Choose the magnet before working on the application. Read the requirements for HSU, MST, Journalism and Communication, Visual Arts and YPAS. The application should show why that particular program fits the student, not simply why the student wants to attend Manual.

  2. Identify recommenders now. MST requires math and science teachers. J and C requires one recommendation from a current or previous Language Arts teacher and another teacher familiar with the student's academic work. Manual emails the recommendation form after the application is submitted, so families should confirm the correct email addresses before submitting.

  3. Write down activities while they are easy to remember. HSU, MST and J and C each ask applicants to identify six important activities. Work, volunteering, clubs, sports and outside organizations can count where the application allows them.

  4. Let the student do the writing. Parents can ask questions, help a child remember an experience and make sure every part of the prompt was answered. The words need to belong to the applicant.

  5. Know which records Manual already has. For JCPS students, Manual obtains academic and attendance information from the district. Students who have not attended a JCPS school may need to provide attendance records, standardized test results, transcripts and a current grade report. Exact requirements vary by magnet.

  6. Do not rush the submission just because the portal opens. JCPS does not give an advantage to an application submitted first. A correct application on November 20 is not behind an application submitted November 2 simply because it arrived later.

Your first choice can matter

Families considering several magnet schools should pay attention to the order they select them.

JCPS says second choice magnet selections are not included in the magnet wait list and are reviewed according to capacity and program need. Manual's own FAQ is more specific: second choice Manual applications are reviewed only if seats remain after first choice applications have been reviewed.

Families still comparing Manual with Male, Brown or their assigned high school can use the JCPS Insider School Choice Guide and the JCPS Insider school comparison tool before deciding.

The JCPS Insider duPont Manual parent guide also brings Manual's admissions, programs, school information and transportation details into one place.

Do not mistake building capacity for available freshman seats

JCPS lists Manual's optimal building capacity at 2,066 students. The 2025 to 2026 enrollment figure was 1,918.

Subtracting those numbers gives 148.

It does not mean Manual had 148 open freshman seats.

Building capacity measures how many students the facility can accommodate. It does not show how many openings exist in HSU, MST, J and C, Visual Arts or YPAS for a particular incoming class.

Manual also accepts students in grades ten through twelve only when space is available and magnet requirements can be met.

Until JCPS publishes actual seats and offers by magnet, unofficial acceptance rates should be treated carefully.

October 24 is a date Manual families should watch

The district's 2026 to 2027 Parent Family School Calendar lists the Showcase of Schools for Saturday, October 24, 2026. JCPS has not yet posted the detailed 2026 Showcase event page with the time, location and other event information, so families should check the district site again before heading out. The district's document library currently includes the 2026 to 2027 Parent Family School Calendar.

The timing is useful. Showcase falls just over a week before magnet applications open.

Manual has already posted another option for some families.

Eighth grade students who are not currently attending JCPS can register for Manual's Prospective Student Experiences on October 8, October 15 or October 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Manual describes the student only sessions as a campus tour and question and answer opportunity with current students.

For families who can attend a tour, Showcase or school event, ask questions that are harder to answer from a brochure: What does a ninth grader's workload really look like? Which recommendation does this magnet want? How much time do students spend on magnet classes? What makes students struggle after they get in?

And ask about transportation before an acceptance letter arrives.

A Manual acceptance does not automatically come with a bus

For the current 2026 to 2027 school year, JCPS says regular transportation to Manual is available to students who are directly certified for free and reduced lunch. Special education students also qualify when transportation is documented as an accommodation in their Individualized Education Program.

That is the current school year rule, not a guarantee for 2027 to 2028.

Families who would need a bus to make Manual workable should check transportation again before accepting a seat.

Between now and November 2, the useful work is fairly unglamorous: pick the magnet that genuinely fits, read its actual requirements, gather the student's real activities, line up the correct recommenders and make sure both parts of the application get completed.

That is far more useful than trying to reverse engineer a magic GPA that Manual does not publish.
