Free swimming and pizza, a Waterfront walk, STEM activities, children’s authors, neighborhood festivals, live music, bingo and a pay what you can museum day are all on Louisville’s calendar. Here are the family events worth knowing about before the weekend starts...

You can fill a surprising amount of this weekend without paying an admission charge.

Friday night has free swimming and pizza. Saturday brings a free Waterfront event, library programs, Gaslight, NuLu Fest, children’s authors, community festivals and live music. Sunday includes the Speed Art Museum at whatever price your family chooses to pay.

JCPS Insider checked current organizer, library and government listings for September 18 through 20.

One warning before building a completely free weekend: free admission does not necessarily mean the whole outing is free. Parking, food, shopping and optional activities can still add to the bill.

Louder Than Life also runs Thursday through Sunday at the Kentucky Expo Center. LMPD lists restrictions on Phillips Lane each day, plus nighttime closures of Interstate 65 and Interstate 264 ramps to Phillips Lane. Families traveling through the Expo Center and airport area should allow extra time.

Friday night: free swimming and pizza

The 21st Annual Back to School Block Party runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 18, at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue.

Louisville Metro says the event includes free open swimming for all ages, complimentary pizza and refreshments and an opportunity to make child identification cards. Registration is open, and attendees are encouraged to register in advance to help organizers plan.

Anyone planning to swim needs appropriate swimwear.

Louisville Metro’s September 15 announcement says children younger than 18 must attend with a parent or guardian. It is not a drop off event, and unaccompanied minors will not be admitted.

Gaslight fills Jeffersontown all weekend

The Gaslight Festival Weekend runs Friday through Sunday in downtown Jeffersontown.

Festival hours are 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a soft close beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Kids Zone behind Chase Bank runs 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday morning also has Gaslight Festival Family Fun Time from 10 a.m. to noon at the Gaslight Pavilion, 10434 Watterson Trail. The Explore a Truck feature is expected to have six or seven vehicles that children can get inside, with examples including a police car, dump truck and ambulance.

Sunday’s Gaslight Car Show runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Taylorsville Road, with custom, classic and exotic cars, live music, prizes and awards.

Driving into the festival area takes some planning. Watterson Trail and Taylorsville Road begin closing at 3 p.m. Friday, with the main weekend closures scheduled to remain in place until approximately 8 p.m. Sunday.

Gaslight is also a pet free festival. The Jeffersontown Chamber says pets are not allowed on festival grounds.

The Chamber’s current festival weekend page does not list a general admission charge or a separate price for Kids Zone activities. Families should not assume that food, rides or other optional attractions inside the festival cost nothing.

JCPS Insider has more upcoming events in its Louisville fall festival guide. Louisville Fall Festivals 2026

Start Saturday at Waterfront Park

Kids Center Walk and Roll runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday on the Big Four Lawn, 1101 River Road.

The morning begins with a one mile walk or roll and continues with games, food, music and family activities. This year’s theme encourages superhero costumes.

Admission is free. Donations and fundraising for Kids Center for Pediatric Therapies are welcomed but are not required to participate.

Saturday at the library

Louisville Free Public Library’s current calendar confirms three Saturday programs for children.

At Middletown Library, 12556 Shelbyville Road, JuSTEMagine Louisville runs from 10 a.m. to noon. LFPL lists the program for children ages 6 through 12 and teens.

At Northeast Regional Library, 15 Bellevoir Circle, Nature Play runs from 2 to 3 p.m. for preschool and school age children. Registration is required.

The program includes nature exploration and creative play and takes place rain or shine, so families should dress for the weather. LFPL also says the program is designed for children and accompanying adults, and adults should attend and participate with their child.

At Southwest Regional Library, 9725 Dixie Highway, Eat the Rainbow runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 3 through 12. Children can make a rainbow fruit kabob, vote for their favorite vegetable dip and do a project with Master Gardeners.

Meet children’s authors at Douglass Community Center

Read, Create, Imagine: From Storytime to Storyteller runs from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Douglass Community Center, 2305 Douglass Boulevard.

The free event includes local children’s book authors, live readings, literacy activities, games, giveaways and opportunities to meet authors. Parents can also get literacy tips and connect with local literacy organizations.

Two community events include free food

Louisville Metro’s Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods lists two Saturday community events with free food and family activities.

Project Restoring Our Community Community Day runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2105 Buechel Bank Road. Metro lists a kids zone, giveaways, live performances, health information, family resources and free food.

The First Gethsemane Homecoming Algonquin Parkhill Community Day runs from noon to 4 p.m. at 1159 Algonquin Parkway, with free food and activities centered on family and community.

NuLu Fest is free, but food and parking are not

NuLu Fest runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday along the 600 through 900 blocks of East Market Street.

Admission is free. The festival includes live music, art, vendors, food, drinks, local shopping and activities for all ages. Food, drinks and merchandise are sold separately.

Organizers say free weekend parking is available on several nearby side streets, with paid surface lots also available. Drivers using a metered space should check the meter before walking away.

The current event listing also recommends leaving pets at home because of the crowds, noise and heat. Only service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act are permitted, and they must remain leashed and under the handler’s control.

Free music in Algonquin Park

The Algonquin Park Music Festival is Saturday at Algonquin Park, 1614 Cypress Street.

The family friendly event is free and includes gospel, jazz and R and B performances, along with food trucks, a DJ and dance activities.

There is a schedule discrepancy.

The organizer’s Eventbrite listing and WAVE give the festival hours as noon to 7 p.m., while LMPD’s current calendar lists the 3rd Annual Jazz in Algonquin Park from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Families going specifically for the advertised music programming should treat noon as the safer arrival time unless organizers publish an updated schedule before Saturday.

Free Saturday night bingo at Berrytown

Heroes and Villains Bingo runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Berrytown Recreation Center, 1300 Heafer Road.

Louisville Metro lists the event as free and open to all ages, with several rounds of heroes and villains themed bingo. Berrytown is also home to Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation program.

Sunday at the Speed is pay what you can

The Speed Art Museum, 2035 South Third Street, is open from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The museum’s current admission page says Sunday general admission is pay what you can, including the option to enter free. Certain events, programs and Speed Cinema screenings require separate tickets.

On September 20, Speed Together: Explore and Create runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Registration is free. The program gives families time to explore galleries and take part in art and creative activities.
