JCPS told its school board that morning bus drop offs were on time 99.2 percent of the time during the 2024 to 2025 school year.
The figure appeared in the district's Transportation Year in Review at the June 24, 2025 board meeting. The presentation described it as “24 25 year long on time AM drop off service for Bus Riders.”
It does not say how many minutes late still counted as on time. It does not say how afternoon routes performed. And it does not tell a parent how often a bus scheduled for 4:10 actually reached the corner at 4:10.
JCPS Insider could not locate a public methodology that defines the on time window, and we could not locate a public stop by stop record that would let us test the figure against actual curb arrivals.
What JCPS does publish about bus performance
JCPS began the 2026 to 2027 school year with more than 700 bus drivers and about 640 routes. Before opening day, the district said all 640 routes were covered, including coverage for expected driver absences.
Every JCPS bus had completed its route by 6:22 p.m. on August 6.
Chief Operating Officer Rob Fulk told Spectrum News that the comparable first day clear time the previous year was 6:29 p.m.
But that still cannot tell a parent whether Bus 1234 reached one neighborhood stop at 4:08 instead of 4:17.
Recent events show how quickly conditions can change on particular routes.
On September 4, more than 100 JCPS bus drivers called out during Louisville's extreme heat. In a July transportation update, Fulk had said the district typically sees about 80 driver callouts a day, according to Courier Journal reporting.
Stuart Middle School gave families a concrete example. The school told families through its live feed that two buses would be delayed about 20 minutes because other buses would take their students and then return for the students still waiting.
Bus Teller gives you the schedule. My Ride K 12 gives you the live estimate
Bus Teller and My Ride K 12 answer different questions.
Bus Teller shows a student's assigned bus, stop location and expected pickup and drop off times. JCPS says Bus Teller does not provide real time tracking or a live estimated arrival time.
My Ride K 12 uses real time GPS data. Once a student is connected, families can see the bus location and estimated arrival information. JCPS introduced the system for the 2026 to 2027 school year.
JCPS still tells students to be at the stop five minutes early
Even with live GPS available, JCPS tells students to arrive at their bus stop five minutes before the bus.
Traffic changes. Boarding can take longer at one stop. A substitute driver may be covering the route. Driver absences can require buses to double back, as Stuart families saw during the September disruption.
What a family can use is a pattern: is the gap between the scheduled time and the real arrival small enough to plan around?
You can measure your own route in one school week
For five school days, write down four things:
The scheduled Bus Teller time.
The time the bus actually reaches the stop.
The My Ride K 12 estimate a few minutes before arrival.
Any unusual circumstance, such as a substitute bus, driver shortage or major traffic problem.
Five days will not tell you whether JCPS buses are reliable districtwide.
It can tell you whether your child's route has a pattern.
A bus that usually arrives between 4:07 and 4:12 for a scheduled 4:10 stop is one thing.
A bus that arrives at 3:55 one day and 4:30 the next creates a much different problem for a family trying to arrange pickup, child care or work schedules.
If the pattern becomes a problem, JCPS directs families with route questions to their child's school or the Transportation Office at 502 485 3470. The district says families may sometimes get information more quickly from their area bus compound after school begins.
Be careful what you post when the bus is late
A screenshot from My Ride K 12 can reveal a live bus location, route information or details about a child's daily routine.
Parents comparing delays in neighborhood groups can share that a bus is late without posting a child's name, student information, home location or a screenshot showing precisely where children are waiting.
If a bus stops moving on the map, do not assume that means it was involved in a crash. My Ride K 12 is a bus location and arrival tool, not an automatic accident notification system.
JCPS has a public morning drop off rate from 2024 to 2025. Parents still do not have a public record of how often the scheduled stop time matches the arrival they wait for at the curb.
