When Jefferson County Public Schools sends a substitute bus, My Ride K 12 can keep showing the regular one. On August 4, 2026, JCPS said sub bus numbers and live location belong in that app, and Tyler Technologies says the app syncs whatever route information is in its transportation software. If the bus at the curb and the bus on the phone do not match, read the number on the bus and call the school or Student Transportation Services at 502 485 3470.
Why does My Ride K 12 show the wrong bus when JCPS uses a substitute?
My Ride K 12 follows the bus JCPS has entered for your child's run. It does not look down the street and pick the closest yellow bus.
In its August 4, 2026 article, JCPS prepared to welcome students back, the district split the job in two. Bus Teller, opened through the transportation portal at jcps.me/transportation, shows the bus number, the stop, and the estimated pickup and drop off times. JCPS said Bus Teller "does not provide real time tracking or live estimated arrival time information."
The same article says My Ride K 12 lets guardians "view their child's real time bus location and view updates directly on their phones such as sub bus numbers." The regular assignment can stay in Bus Teller while the substitute is supposed to show up as an update in the app. A parent who refreshes only Bus Teller on that morning can still be looking at the regular bus number.
Tyler Technologies, which makes the app, says "up to date route information" in its Student Transportation software "is synced with My Ride K 12," and that arrival estimates come from the GPS service it calls Tyler Drive when that service is connected. On the Google Play listing checked October 3, 2026, Tyler says, "The availability of features is managed by your school district's transportation office."
A September 2, 2026 update note on that listing says the location page will now only show one vehicle if a vehicle is available, instead of duplicating under certain conditions. If no vehicle is available during the run, the note says a better message tells the user that connected data might not be available. In a Play Store reply dated September 26, 2025, Tyler told a reviewer, "It sounds like the bus isn't being configured or substituted by your local transportation department." That reply predates JCPS using the app, and it does not name Louisville.
In a Spectrum News story published August 16, 2026, Rob Fulk, chief operating officer, said My Ride K 12 connects parent notifications to the JCPS routing system more efficiently, and that parents had already flagged glitches the district was troubleshooting with the company. He did not say how fast a substitute has to be entered before the map switches.
JCPS has not published that timing. It has not published a rule for which number wins when Bus Teller, My Ride K 12, and the bus at the stop disagree.
What if your child was already assigned two buses?
For some early childhood riders, a different afternoon bus is the assignment, not a surprise substitute.
The Student Transportation Services page, checked October 3, 2026, tells those families to check the bus number because some students ride one bus in the morning and another in the afternoon. The school provides that information. Be outside at least ten minutes before the scheduled stop. Those students are picked up and dropped off at the same address. A parent, guardian, or authorized person 16 or older has to meet the child. If that person is not there, the student is returned to school.
The same page says drivers contact families in special needs programs about pickup time before school opens. A substitute question on that kind of route starts at the school.
How do you check the bus that actually stopped?
Compare the Bus Teller number, any sub bus line in My Ride K 12, and the number you can read on the bus loading your stop.
If My Ride K 12 already shows the number on that bus, the app did what the August 4 article described. If it is still following a different bus, or it says connected data is missing, read the number on the bus.
The transportation page says students are expected to ride their assigned buses and cannot switch buses without authorization from a principal or the Transportation Services Department. A district substitute on your child's route is not permission to send your child home on a friend's bus.
If My Ride K 12 shows no bus at all, treat that as an assignment problem, not a substitute, and start with the school.
The transportation page still says to be at the stop five minutes before the bus. A wrong icon does not move the stop.
What should you save before you call?
Save the facts the school can check against its own screen. The note is yours.
Write down the date and the time.
Write down the stop and the bus number in Bus Teller.
Screenshot My Ride K 12, including any sub bus line and the map.
Write down the number you can read on the bus that stopped, and whether your child boarded.
Write down the name of the person you reach and what they say.
Who do you call while the stop is still fresh?
Call your child's school or Student Transportation Services at 502 485 3470.
The Student Transportation Services page, checked October 3, 2026, lists main office hours as 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and bus compound offices as 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. It says that after school starts, route information may be obtained more quickly from the area bus compounds. It does not print those compound phone numbers, and it lists no number after 6 p.m., so the next call is the school in the morning. Ask the school or the main transportation office which compound has the route.
Do not call 502 485 7433. On August 11, 2026, JCPS posted that the 485 RIDE bus hotline had closed for the 2026 to 2027 school year, and told families to reach the child's school or check the frequently asked questions at jcpsfirstday.com. Spectrum News on August 16 quoted Rob Fulk saying the district ended that line Wednesday, three days early. August 11 was a Tuesday. The district post is the record that the line is closed. The transportation page checked October 3, 2026 does not list 502 485 7433.
