Saturday, October 10, 2026 has free museum doors in downtown Louisville, a free art park on the University of Louisville campus, and three outdoor stops with a reason to go today: Bernheim, the Iroquois overlook, and the Falls of the Ohio. Saturday gallery tickets at the Speed Art Museum are full price, and the free option there is the art park. KMAC Contemporary Art Museum is closed all weekend. Bernheim's play program is real, and the car admission is still a recommended $15.

JCPS Insider checked the museum and park pages on Friday, October 9, 2026.

Where can you walk into a free museum today?

Roots 101 African American Museum is hosting Save Our Stories today, Saturday, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 124 North 1st Street, Louisville, KY 40202. The museum page says the festival is free and open to the public. It is a community storytelling and archiving day with the Louisville Story Program and the Community Archiving Workshop Collective, not a separate toddler storytime. Phone 502 384 1940. The event page encourages advance registration and says the first 200 guests get a shirt and a meal ticket. The page does not list a parking fee.

21c Museum Hotel says its galleries are open round the clock and free of charge. The hotel page places the building at 700 W Main Street, Louisville, Kentucky 40202, on Museum Row. There is no Saturday tour time on the Friday tour page, so today is a walk in, not a 5 p.m. group. You do not need a ticket to look at the art in the hotel.

Do not add KMAC to that Main Street walk this weekend. The KMAC visit page says the museum at 715 West Main Street is closed to the public Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11, while the staff prepares for KMAsquerade. The door is shut.

What is free at the Speed, and what is not?

The Speed Art Museum visit page says the Elizabeth P. and Frederick K. Cressman Art Park is free, ungated, and open every day from dawn until dusk. The museum address is 2035 South Third Street, Louisville, KY 40208. That park is the Saturday plan. Sculptures and lawn, no gallery ticket.

The visit page lists gallery hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Those tickets are not low cost. The same page lists adults ages 18 to 59 at $25, children ages 4 to 17 at $21, and seniors 60 and older at $23. Members are free. Last tickets are sold one hour before closing. Phone 502 634 2700.

The visit page also says Sunday general admission is pay what you can, including free. That is Sunday, October 11, from noon to 5 p.m. It is not the Saturday rule. If someone in your group heard "the Speed is free on Sunday," they heard a different day.

Where is the nature play, and what does the car cost?

Free Play Saturday is today, October 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Playcosystem, the 17 acre nature playground at Bernheim Forest and Arboretum. Kids use loose parts. Caregivers can talk with staff about play. The event page lists phone 502 955 8512.

The play page does not say the gate fee is waived. The visitor page lists $15 per car as recommended admission. Members get free daily admission. The exception line is for ticketed programs and event days. Nothing on the Free Play page says October 10 is one of those days, and nothing on it says you skip the recommended admission. Budget $15 for the car unless your membership covers it. The address is 2075 Clermont Rd, Clermont, KY 40110. Bernheim describes the forest as just 30 minutes south of downtown Louisville. The visitor page lists grounds hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., which covers the 11 a.m. play start. A bus is a separate $100 fee. That is not the family car trip.

Is the Iroquois overlook open to cars today?

Yes. Louisville Parks and Recreation opens the Uppill Road gate today for vehicles to reach the North Overlook and Summit Field. The Olmsted Parks Conservancy schedule lists October 10 and October 11, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Iroquois Park, 2120 Rundill Rd, Louisville, KY 40214. The page does not list a ticket price. It describes a once a month car gate, not a festival with vendors.

If you want the view, go while the gate is open. The hours on this page are about the overlook road. For a playground day that does not depend on the gate, use JCPS Insider's Parks and Trails guide.

Across the river, the Falls of the Ohio State Park events calendar lists a Fossil Bed Discovery Hike today, October 10, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., led by a park naturalist. The longer Outer Fossil Bed Discovery Hike is a different program on Sunday. The park's fossil bed hike listing says the walk goes down 60 steps to the Devonian fossil beds and back up a ramp, meets on the Observation Deck, and is free with the $2 parking fee. Wear shoes for walking on rock. The park is at 201 W. Riverside Drive, Clarksville, IN 47129. Phone 812 280 9970.
