School is back Monday, but Saturday still has a full free and cheap menu across the city. Library mornings, a free Waterfront jug band day, afternoon art and music for little kids, a planetarium stop, and a dog reading program are all on the calendar for October 3, 2026.

JCPS Insider checked current LFPL and organizer listings as of September 28, 2026. This roundup is Saturday focused. The St. James Court Art Show also continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Old Louisville near 1402 St. James Court, with free admission for all ages if you want a multi day backdrop. It is rain or shine, and no pets are allowed except documented service animals.

Free still means watch the extras. Parking, food, and craft supplies can add up. Several afternoon library programs land at 2 p.m., so pick one lane of town instead of racing from Shawnee to Crescent Hill.

Cross check bigger fall dates on JCPS Insider’s Louisville Fall Festivals 2026 guide and the This Month calendar. School year dates sit on Dates and Deadlines.

Saturday morning: storytime and playdate

Storytime Hang runs Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Portland Library, 3305 Northwestern Parkway. It is free for kids and caregivers.

Pint Size Playdate runs Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Matthews Library, 3940 Grandview Avenue. It is free and listed for ages 0 to 5.

Portland and St. Matthews are not a quick hop. Choose the branch that matches your morning drive and nap window.

Free all afternoon at the Waterfront

The National Jug Band Jubilee runs Saturday from noon to 9:00 p.m. at the Brown Forman Amphitheater in Waterfront Park.

Admission is free. Kids activities and food vendors are part of the jubilee, and food is not free. Come for an hour or stay longer. Bring layers for the river and plan food as its own cost. If you already spent the morning at St. Matthews, downtown is a cleaner second stop than a west end library sprint.

Saturday at 2 p.m.: pick one library lane

Five free LFPL programs cluster in the early afternoon. You cannot do them all. Match age, registration rules, and neighborhood.

Family Art Day: Pumpkin Painting is Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Southwest Regional Library, 9725 Dixie Highway. It is free and listed for ages 3 to 12. Registration is required and closes at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Call 502 933 0029. Bring your own pumpkin. Mini pumpkins may be available while supplies last.

Music Together with UpBeat Louisville is Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Shively Library, 3920 Dixie Highway. It is free and listed for ages 0 to 5. Shively and Southwest sit on the same Dixie corridor, which helps if pumpkin painting is full.

Indoor Planetarium is Saturday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Crescent Hill Library, 2762 Frankfort Avenue. It is free and aimed at roughly ages 6 to 12 and families. Better fit for elementary kids than the toddler music slots.

Yoga Storytime with Sun Dog Yoga is Saturday from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. at Shawnee Library, 3912 West Broadway. It is free and listed for ages 0 to 5.

WAGS Read with a Dog is Saturday from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Northeast Regional Library, 15 Bellevoir Circle. It is free for ages 3 to 12. Registration is required for a 15 minute slot; call 502 394 0379 or email northeastyouthservices@lfpl.org. Do not show up cold.

Build a realistic day, not a scavenger hunt

A clean plan looks like this: one morning library stop near home, then either Waterfront jug band time or one registered afternoon program. Add St. James only if everyone still has patience.

Fall break is over. Keep Saturday fun enough that Monday does not start with meltdowns.

Before you go, open the LFPL or organizer link for your first choice, finish any registration, and set a leave by alarm that matches traffic from your neighborhood. If the first pick is full, jump to the next program on the same side of town and leave the cross town idea for another weekend.
