What this school is
Western is a whole-school STEM magnet rather than a program inside a comprehensive high school. Its advertised pathways are Computer Programming, Digital Design and Game Development, Culinary Food Science, and Public Health Discoveries and Data Science.
The school lists dual credit with UofL, JCTC, BCTC, and Bellarmine. It also promotes industry certificates, STEM mentors, Distinguished STEM Scholars, Rotary Bridge, Jefferson Scholar, a commercial kitchen, a greenhouse, and an eSports arena.
Enrollment was 394 on October 1, 2025, in a building with an optimal capacity of 1,441. A smaller school can mean shorter lines and familiar adults, but it can also mean fewer upper-grade sections. Ask which courses and pathways ran last year.
Principal
Melanie Weaver
Melanie Weaver is a Western alumna from the class of 1999. She taught at Western from 2005 to 2014 before working at Jeffersontown, Doss, and Ramsey Middle.
She was named principal in September 2024 and started in October 2024. Her public comments describe the work as rebuilding a small STEM magnet.

How families get in
Western is a districtwide magnet. Families apply during the JCPS magnet window, and a southwest Louisville address is not required.
- For 2026–27, the application window was November 3–December 19, 2025, with notices in April 2026.
- The listed 2027–28 window is November 2–December 18, 2026. Confirm current dates with JCPS.
- Families may list up to two magnets. On-time applications are processed together.
- Jefferson County residency is required.
- There is no sibling preference, and wait lists do not carry over.
- The Choices Guide did not list an extra essay packet for Western.
- Late applications are considered only if seats remain.
- The 2025–26 data book listed 163 magnet applications for a campus with 394 students.
Transportation
- The school page advertises transportation, but magnet busing rules have changed.
- Confirm transportation for the year of enrollment and verify the stop in Infinite Campus before relying on a ride.
If the school requests additional materials, submit them by the stated deadline. Incomplete applications can lose consideration.
Who it tends to fit
A good match when
- A specific pathway in coding, game development, culinary food science, or public health and data science is central to the decision.
- A small high school sounds preferable to a much larger magnet.
- A 7:30 a.m. start on Rockford Lane is workable.
- The family will tour and verify which courses are actually scheduled.
Think twice when
- The decision is based mainly on published KSA performance.
- The family wants Manual’s AP volume or the traditional structure associated with Male or Butler.
- A large peer group is needed in every elective.
- The commute works only if magnet transportation is guaranteed.
Western offers a STEM theme and small enrollment, not Manual’s published test profile. Transportation, staffing, enrollment, and course sections can change.
