What this school is

Louisville Male High opened in 1856. It was a boys' school until the early 1950s. The motto on the school page is "For God, For Country, For Male." Colors are purple and gold. Teams are the Bulldogs. The current campus at 4409 Preston Highway is the former Durrett High building; Male moved there in 1991. The district made Male the Traditional High School magnet in the 1970s — the first magnet program in JCPS.

Traditional here means structure: uniforms, a published philosophy of order and high expectations, and a college-prep core. It is not Manual's five-magnet menu and not Central's career academy. Choices Guide pathways include Accounting, Army JROTC, Computer Programming, E-Commerce, Engineering, Management Entrepreneurship, PLTW Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, and Teaching and Learning. Dual credit runs through UofL, JCTC, and Bellarmine. The school lists 24 AP courses.

How families get in

Male and Butler are the two traditional high magnets. The Choices Guide says no extra packet — no essays, no recommendations, no work samples. Admission is a lottery inside a geographic boundary. School Finder tells you which traditional campus your address is tied to. You still have to apply in the magnet window. Listing Male does not move you into Butler's pool.

• Apply in the JCPS magnet window. For 2026–27 that was November 3–December 19, 2025, with notices in April 2026. The 2027–28 window is listed as November 2–December 18, 2026.
• On-time applications are processed together — not first-come.
• No sibling preference. Wait lists do not carry over. Jefferson County residency is required.
• Traditional middle schools (Barret, Johnson, Jefferson County Traditional) feed many applicants. They are not a guaranteed seat at Male.
• Demand snapshot: the 2025–26 data book listed 120 magnet applications against a campus of 1,635. Most seats are held by students already in the traditional pipeline.

4409 Preston Highway sits on the south-central corridor, not downtown with Manual or west with Central. Data book start time is 7:30 a.m. Magnet transportation is year-specific. Confirm the stop in Infinite Campus before you treat Preston Highway as a guaranteed bus ride.
