What this school is
Western Middle School for the Arts is JCPS's districtwide visual and performing-arts magnet for grades 6–8. The building at 2201 West Main Street opened in 1928 as an industrial-arts junior high. In 2010–11 it became the arts magnet. Every student picks a major and studies that art every day, alongside math, science, social studies, and English.
Majors: dance, theatre, media arts, visual arts, band, string orchestra, piano / digital composition, and vocal music. The campus has a 486-seat auditorium, a 200-seat black box theater, a piano lab, a dance studio, and theatre classrooms after a multimillion-dollar renovation. The school also offers Excel and Advance Program work in math and English, plus gifted and talented services.
Who runs the building
Dr. Nayasha Owens Patterson
Dr. Nayasha Owens Patterson became principal on July 31, 2023, after serving as interim principal and, before that, assistant principal at Western. She taught social studies in Fayette County and at Thomas Jefferson Middle, holds five degrees, and sang as a soloist with Kentucky State University's gospel ensemble. In 2026 she was named Educators of Color Middle School Principal of the Year.

How families get in
Western is not a lottery-only magnet like Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts. Families apply in the JCPS school-choice window and complete Western's own audition package. The school's admissions page asks for the audition form plus two educator recommendations. Audition dates for the next cycle were still listed as TBD in early September 2026; an open house is already set.
- Apply through JCPS during the on-time magnet window. For 2026–27 that window was November 3–December 19, 2025, with notices in April 2026.
- The working window for 2027–28 on the JCPS parent calendar is November 2–December 18, 2026. Confirm it in the fall.
- Submit Western's audition package. Older packets asked students to prepare a first- and second-choice major.
- Attend the required audition. Music auditions have included theory, rhythm, pitch matching, and a prepared performance.
- Magnet Open House: Thursday, October 29, 2026, 5:30 p.m. Student performances, then an admin session. Walk-ins welcome until 7:00 p.m.
- A seat does not automatically include a bus. Complete JCPS Transportation Verification if you need a ride.

Location and daily life
The campus sits on West Main in Portland, west of downtown. That is a different commute from East Main (Lincoln) or the East End. Ask about current magnet transportation before you treat 8:40 drop-off as simple.
Daily life is built around the major: rehearsals, concerts, KMEA assessments, theatre productions such as She Kills Monsters, and projects like the 2026 Louisville Orchestra Creators Corps choir collaboration performed at West Fest. Clubs listed in the Choices Guide include Beta Club, National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, STLP, and a principal's student advisory council.
