Robotics

Students design, build and program competition robots. JCPS schools use a mix of LEGO, VEX and FIRST, depending on the building.
What Robotics is
- A build-and-program activity: students design a robot, code it, and run it against a task or another team's robot.
- The platform depends on the school — LEGO, VEX or FIRST — and that choice changes the season, the cost and the kit.
What Robotics is not
- Not one identical district program. Two JCPS schools can run completely different robotics seasons.
- Not the same as STLP, even though both involve technology.
- A club that builds at school is not automatically a competition team.
Who runs it
A school sponsor runs the team. The district does not run one robotics league for every school.
Season and calendar
Fall through winter for most competition teams. Year-round building can happen before the official season starts. Confirm locally — the platform the school uses sets the calendar.
How kids get on Robotics
- Ask which platform the school uses — LEGO, VEX or FIRST.
- Ask whether there is a tryout, or a limited pit and crew roster.
- Ask what the family pays for kits, registration and travel.
- Ask whether joining the club means competing this year, because it often does not.
A teacher or school sponsor runs the group. The district may coordinate a league or showcase, but it does not staff the team. Not every JCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year — confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.
Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office, the counselor, or the teacher who runs the group. JCPS Insider does not keep a live sponsor list and cannot tell you who the coach is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, meeting time, or roster.
Questions to ask the school
- Which robotics program do you run, and which grades are on it?
- What days and times does the team meet?
- What do kits and registration cost, and who covers it?
- Who travels to competitions, and how is that decided?
- Is this building actually competing this year, or only building?
Schools we have seen list Robotics
This list is incomplete on purpose and is not a directory. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it.
Still verifying. We have not published a robotics school list yet and we will not invent a count. Browse the schools directory and check a school's own page, and tell us what your school offers — that link is for adding a school, not for asking who the sponsor is. Browse the schools directory or tell us what your school offers.
