Parents keep asking how Atherton weighs grades against the essay. Atherton's own pages explain how to get the application. As of October 11, 2026, none of the public pages JCPS Insider checked prints the score sheet.

Atherton High School has not posted a scoring rubric for its magnet application on any public JCPS or Atherton page JCPS Insider checked on October 11, 2026. That includes the school's Applying to Atherton page, its JCPS homepage, and the district's 2026 to 2027 High School Choices guide. So the phrase "student academic records," and the point values parents have been trading online, can't be checked against anything Atherton has published.

What Atherton does print is the order of steps, and that order decides whether your child is scored at all.

How do you apply to Atherton if it is not your resides school?

You apply through the JCPS application and list Atherton's IB program first. The Applying to Atherton page tells eighth grade families who are not zoned for Atherton to pick the Atherton International Baccalaureate/International Studies selection as their first choice.

The page says that after the JCPS application is submitted with Atherton IB as the first choice, you will receive an email with the Atherton application. That second Atherton form is where the essay, recommendations, and records questions live. The public page does not reproduce it.

The page also says Atherton "cannot consider any requests for applications if Atherton is not listed as a first choice school," and tells families not to list Atherton second.

When is the 2027 to 2028 application window?

The JCPS application period for the 2027 to 2028 school year runs November 2, 2026, through December 18, 2026, according to the district's Student Assignment page, checked October 11, 2026.

Atherton's page adds that "applications will not be reviewed prior to the end of the window so rushing to return an application will not improve your consideration." The district page says the same thing in its own words: applications are processed together at the end of the period.

What does "student academic records" mean on the Atherton application?

Parents in Louisville school groups this fall described categories worth 65 and 15 points with top scores of 5. Those figures do not appear on any public Atherton or JCPS page reviewed for this story.

The closest official language is in Atherton's IB program FAQ, linked from the school site. It covers who can take IB classes once a student is enrolled, not magnet admission. It says a student "must have satisfactory academic standing in each content area, teacher recommendation, IB coordinator recommendation and principal approval." Treat that as a course rule, not the admission score sheet.

The 2026 to 2027 High School Choices guide does not list Atherton among the eight magnet schools. It lists Atherton under magnet programs, for its International Baccalaureate program, and its Atherton profile names no selection criteria. The same guide says some magnet schools "may ask for additional information as part of the application process, such as a student work sample or test scores," and that applications "will be considered incomplete if requested information is not submitted to a school."

Atherton's page also warns: "This process is very competitive and your response to any part of this application may be the determining factor in your acceptance."

How is that different from duPont Manual?

duPont Manual posts its score sheets. Four of Manual's magnets, High School University, Math Science Technology, Journalism and Communication, and Visual Arts, each link a scoring sheet from the Manual admissions site. JCPS Insider broke down what those Manual application materials score.

Atherton has posted no equivalent for the years JCPS Insider checked. A parent comparing the two is comparing a published sheet with an emailed form.

Where can you ask Atherton in person before applying?

The JCPS Showcase of Schools is Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, 3029 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd., according to the district's Showcase announcement. Admission and onsite parking are free, and the district says every JCPS school will be there.

Ask the Atherton table three things: whether the 2027 to 2028 Atherton application is scored with points, what counts as academic records (grades, test scores, attendance, or all of them), and whether the score sheet will be sent with the emailed application.

Atherton also offers small group tours during the application period. The school page says to email Freshman Academy counselor Sarah Uhl at sarah.uhl@jefferson.kyschools.us to sign up. Atherton is at 3000 Dundee Road, Louisville, KY 40205. The main office number is 502 485 8202. The JCPS Office of School Choice is at 502 485 6250. School comparisons are on the JCPS Insider Atherton page.

When the Atherton application email arrives after November 2, save it and any attached rubric before you start writing.
