What this school is

J.M. Atherton High sits at 3000 Dundee Road, near the Highlands. The campus opened in 1924 as a girls' school. Colors are maroon and gold. Teams are the Ravens — the name replaced Rebels in 2021 after an SBDM vote. The motto is "What you do makes a difference." Board member: Tricia Lister. Listed feeders: Highland and Meyzeek.

Atherton is an Academies of Louisville campus: Freshman Academy, then Engineering, Health Science, or Media Arts. Pathways include aerospace and aircraft maintenance, mechanical engineering, biomedical sciences and patient-care technician, cinematography, and graphic design. Dual credit and industry certificates (FAA Part 107, PCT, Adobe) are listed in the Choices Guide.

Atherton is JCPS's only IB World School. The 2026–27 High School Choices Guide lists International Baccalaureate at Atherton as a magnet program inside a resides school — not as one of the eight magnet high schools. A 2024 principal note describes a whole-school IB approach in ninth and tenth grade, then the Diploma Programme for students who take the full suite. Honors and Advance Program courses are also listed. Landing in the building and landing in the IB diploma track are different questions. Ask how many seniors actually sit the full diploma.

How families get in

Two doors, not one. Atherton the campus is a resides Academies of Louisville high school — not one of JCPS's eight magnet high schools, so there is no magnet-school application for the building. IB at Atherton is a magnet program inside that campus. The 2026–27 Choices Guide lists it that way: magnet schools vs. magnet programs. Use School Finder first, then decide which door you need.

• If this is your resides school: register first if the child is new to JCPS, then enroll at Atherton. No magnet application for the building.
• Choice Zone families still pick close-to-home or far-away. Confirm that map for your address.
• Academy pathways are chosen after ninth grade. The Freshman Academy is the on-ramp.
• Resides enrollment puts you in the building. The IB Diploma Programme still has course prerequisites — ask counseling how students move from the whole-school IB approach into the diploma track.
• If this is not your resides school and you want IB: apply to the International Baccalaureate magnet program at Atherton during the JCPS magnet window. That is a magnet-program application, not a magnet-school application.
• Academies only, from outside the zone: follow current network or transfer rules. That is not the eight-school magnet list. A 2.0 GPA is often cited for Academies lottery eligibility — confirm the current guide.
• Do not assume magnet transportation. Confirm the stop before you treat Dundee Road as a guaranteed ride.

• School site / KDE badges: 33% proficient, 39% distinguished in reading (72% P+D); 34% proficient, 24% distinguished in math (58% P+D) — stronger published bands than most JCPS high schools.
• U.S. News 2026–27 list: #5 in Kentucky, #519 nationally. JCPS announced August 19, 2026; the Courier Journal covered it the same week.
• Choices Guide / school: IB World School plus Advance Program and honors, and three Academies of Louisville. Ask how many seniors complete the full IB diploma.
• Atherton's published scores sit well above Western, Central, and most resides campuses. They are not Manual. Treat IB as a magnet program inside a large comprehensive school, not a guarantee that every student is on a diploma track.

Location and daily life

3000 Dundee Road is the Highlands / Douglass Loop side of town — a different commute from Male, Butler, or Western. Data-book hours are 7:30 a.m. to about 2:10 p.m.

Resides transportation follows district rules for this address. Magnet-program and transfer placements often do not get a bus. Confirm the stop in Infinite Campus.

The 2025–26 JCPS profile listed 1,514 students against an optimal capacity of 1,262. A $54 million freshman academy opened in January 2026 to relieve that overcrowding, so 1,262 should not be treated as the building's current post-expansion capacity. The homepage now shows 1,476 enrolled.
