Students are back in class Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, after fall break. The biggest public meeting this week is not in Louisville. Tuesday, October 6, at 11 a.m. Eastern, the Interim Joint Committee on Education is scheduled to take up the Jefferson County Public Schools audit in Frankfort. Auditor Allison Ball, Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood, and board chair Dr. Corrie Shull are the names on that agenda. The same evening, a JCPS advisory committee meets at 5 p.m. Eastern at the VanHoose Education Center to keep editing the Student Support and Behavior Intervention Handbook.
School is back
Students are in class Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9. The next Gold Day on the 2026 to 2027 parent calendar is November 2. For elementary and middle schools, that calendar lists October 13 as the end of a grading period and October 22 as report card day, and it says many schools use different schedules, so check your school.
Tuesday morning: the audit hearing in Frankfort
When: Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 11 a.m. Eastern
Where: Annex Room 154, Capitol Annex, 702 Capital Avenue, Frankfort, KY 40601
What the agenda actually lists: Call to order and roll call. Approval of the August 4, 2026, amended minutes and the September 1, 2026, minutes. A presentation on homelessness on college campuses. The Jefferson County Public School District audit. Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics, from Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) staff. Consideration of a referred regulation, 702 KAR 003:220, guidelines for waiver of school fees. Adjournment.
On the audit item, the posted agenda names Auditor Allison Ball, Auditor of Public Accounts; Dr. Brian Yearwood, superintendent; and Dr. Corrie Shull, board chair. Former superintendent Marty Pollio is not on the agenda.
The June 30, 2026, special examination, posted with the committee materials, found that expenses exceeded revenues in each working budget from fiscal year 2022 to fiscal year 2026.
This is a hearing on a posted agenda. The agenda does not show a vote to accept or reject the audit. The same packet includes the special examination, a corrective action plan, and a JCPS presentation. Read those before you assume what Tuesday will decide. It will not, by itself, change a school rule.
The same agenda includes 702 KAR 003:220, guidelines for waiver of school fees. The amendment under consideration would require written notice to parents or guardians, and Community Eligibility Provision enrollment would not by itself waive fees. It is not a new JCPS fee schedule.
The agenda does not list a public comment period. Do not plan on a speaking slot unless a newer agenda adds one.
Watching it is described two different ways. The agenda says Kentucky Education Television (KET) provides coverage of legislative meetings at ket.org/legislature, and that if a scheduling conflict arises, proceedings will be on the legislature live stream page. The Capitol visitors page says committee meetings are open to the public, no special pass is required, and committee meetings are live streamed. Check both pages Tuesday morning.
That visitors page also says the main Capitol building is closed for construction, the road between the Capitol and the Capitol Annex is closed to traffic, and public parking is in the garage on the east side of the Annex, levels 4 through 6. The first floor and basement of the Annex are open to the public. Upper floors require an appointment. The page lists the Public Information Office at 502 564 8100.
Tuesday evening: the behavior handbook committee
When: Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern
Where: VanHoose Education Center, 3332 Newburg Road, Louisville
Name on the notice: Student Support and Behavior Intervention Handbook Revision Committee Meeting
The KSBA notice says the meeting is in person. The agenda is a call to order, greetings and introductions of new participants, an overview, a subcommittee overview, and a conclusion. The notice says committee members will continue a facilitated discussion of potential edits to the 2027 to 2028 handbook.
That is discussion, not adoption. The notice says the committee is advisory and may not make decisions or take action that binds the full Jefferson County Board of Education. It does not list a public comment period. It also does not say whether people who are not on the committee may attend.
The 2026 to 2027 Student Support and Behavior Intervention Handbook says all committee meetings are open to the public, with relevant materials posted to the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). The October 6 notice does not say that. If you go, treat attendance as unconfirmed until the district says the handbook line covers this meeting.
The public board and committee calendar shows this handbook meeting as the only JCPS committee meeting posted for October 4 to 10. No regular board meeting, work session, or special called board meeting is posted in that window. That can change. Look again Sunday and Tuesday.
Coming up next: the October 13 board meeting
The next regular business meeting is Tuesday, October 13, at 6 p.m. Eastern, in Stewart Auditorium at the VanHoose Education Center, 3332 Newburg Road. The meeting page says members of the public may attend in person or watch the live stream. It says meetings are streamed and archived on the district YouTube channel, JCBE Meeting Videos.
The same calendar lists a special meeting labeled executive session at 5 p.m. Eastern that day, also at VanHoose. No public topic list for that session was on the calendar view.
The packet is already posted. These items are recommendations or reports. None of them has been voted on.
The school resource officer policy and the employee social media policies are consent calendar item X.U, a second reading. They can pass with the consent calendar unless a board member pulls them for a separate vote. The Board Policy Committee recommended them on September 14, 2026. The board accepted them on first reading on September 22, 2026. The superintendent recommends that the board adopt them on October 13. The meeting page names 02.31, School Resource Officers; 03.1XY, Employee Use of Social Media (Certified); and 03.2XY, Employee Use of Social Media (Classified). The board is being asked to adopt the attached policies file. That file uses 03.1XYZ and 03.2XYZ, and the classified page in it points back to 03.1XYZ. If the consent item is not pulled, those are the numbers that would pass.
Consent item X.Q.3 recommends that the board accept $2,880,000 from KDE for School Resource Officer salaries. The meeting rationale says that figure is $1,440,000 for 2025 to 2026 and $1,440,000 for 2026 to 2027, at $20,000 per officer each year, with no district obligation past June 30, 2027. The attached 2026 to 2027 award notice, labeled 18RM award notification, lists an award of $1,440,000 for July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. The paired file is the 2025 to 2026 award notice under the same label.
The information item is Quarterly Benchmark Updates from Academics, on literacy, numeracy, well being, attendance, and behavior. The posted recommendation is that the board receive a Quarterly Student Outcomes Report. It is not a consent vote.
Consent item X.P recommends new budget allocations after the working budget. The rationale on the meeting page, submitted by Thomas Aberli, includes $650,000 for Family Resource and Youth Service Centers (FRYSC). It says the state grant would go to salaries, including ten extra workdays, and that JCPS would keep paying operating costs from the general fund at $26.57 per free lunch count. It also says the district is planning general fund costs for centers it expects to open at Hudson Middle and Echo Trail Middle. There is no separate attachment. The next line in that same rationale recommends $600,000 for one contract, RFP 3194, for budget forecast modeling and financial stabilization support. Neither amount is approved.
Speaking rules on the meeting page sit under "Persons Requesting to Address the Board on Action Items or Consent Calendar Items to be Voted Upon Separately at Board Member Request." Each speaker gets three minutes and may not give that time to someone else. A bell sounds at two and a half minutes, and again at three. Speakers may not use props or displays. Handouts can go to the assistant secretary to the board. The page points to the board policy on public participation for the full rule. It does not say how to sign up, and it does not give a deadline. A later line, "Persons Requesting to Address the Board (If Necessary)," has no extra rules under it. Check the meeting page before October 13 if you want to speak.
Two dates just after this week are already on district pages.
Gifted General Intellect Testing is listed on the parent calendar for October 12 to 23, 2026. The calendar does not say how a student gets on the list. Ask your school before that Monday if you think your child should be included.
School choice applications for 2027 to 2028 are not open this week. The student assignment page says the elementary, middle, and high school application period is November 2, 2026, through December 18, 2026. Applications are not handled first come, first served. The Office of School Choice number on that page is 502 485 6250.
Before that window, the district has already published the Showcase of Schools for Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, 3029 W. Muhammad Ali Blvd., Louisville, KY 40212. The September 28 district article says admission and onsite parking are free. The October 13 packet also recommends that the board approve a lease for that event. The lease has not been voted on. The event announcement and the lease vote are not the same thing.
Transportation: no new October alert
The student transportation page does not list an October closure, a route change, or a seasonal hotline. For route questions it says to call your child's school or the Transportation Office at 502 485 3470. It lists main office hours as 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Who is eligible for a bus is a separate question. JCPS Insider's bus eligibility explainer is the parent version of that rule, not a district dispatch line.
The JCPS homepage, checked Saturday evening, did not show a weather closure or a late transportation notice. The parent calendar says closures will be posted on the district site and on local media. If that changes Sunday, the homepage wins over this article.
Saturday, October 10
Times below are Eastern. These are organizer listings, not JCPS events. None of the library pages opened for this article said registration is required, and none listed a fee. Confirm the listing that morning if your plan is tight.

Pumpkins at PlayPort, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., PlayPort at Waterfront Park, 1105 Rowan Street. The Waterfront Park page sets that date and time for Saturday, October 10, 2026, and tells families to bring costumes and trick or treat bags. It does not list a ticket price. Food on that page is tied to named vendors. Do not assume the food is free.
