Winning a school seat and getting a JCPS bus are not the same thing.

For the 2026 to 2027 school year, JCPS publishes eligibility by school type and program, not by a single public "if you live X miles away, you ride" chart on its first day transportation materials. Families still have to complete the Transportation Verification form, then check Bus Teller and the My Ride K 12 app for the assigned stop.

Who JCPS lists as eligible for 2026 to 2027

JCPS published the 2026 to 2027 eligibility categories in its April 13, 2026 article, JCPS families must verify transportation by June 8. As of October 3, 2026, no later district article has replaced that list.

All JCPS students who attend their resides school. In JCPS use, the resides school is the school tied to the home address, not a transfer, a magnet seat, or an optional program outside the attendance area.

All students attending Central High School and Western High School.

All students enrolled at Coleridge Taylor Montessori, Johnson Traditional Middle, Grace James Academy, W.E.B. DuBois Academy, Newcomer Academy, Liberty High, TAPP, Phoenix School of Discovery, Waller Williams Environmental, Breckinridge Metropolitan, and Minor Daniels.

Whitney Young Elementary at Engelhard was on the published 2025 to 2026 eligible list and is not on the published 2026 to 2027 list. Families there should confirm with the school before they plan on last year's stop.

Students who are directly certified for Free and Reduced Lunch and attend Butler Traditional High, Louisville Male High, or duPont Manual High.

Special education students who have transportation written into their Individualized Education Program. Special Needs Transportation is handled separately and does not require the regular Transportation Verification form. Transportation Services Policy 09.2261 also covers some students in temporary housing and foster care. That path, like an IEP transportation case, starts at the school, not in Bus Teller. The operating page is Student Transportation Services.

If your child is on a transfer, in many magnets outside that list, or in an optional program outside the school's attendance area, do not assume a bus comes with the acceptance letter. JCPS SchoolFinder says an optional program outside the attendance area generally does not include district transportation. Insider's school choice guide reminds families that transportation is never guaranteed by winning a seat.

The Manual, Male, and Butler exception parents keep asking about

After JCPS cut most magnet transportation during the driver shortage years, the Board restored limited service. For 2026 to 2027, Manual, Male, and Butler are not "everyone rides" campuses in the published list. Eligibility there is tied to students who are directly certified for Free and Reduced Lunch.

That is different from Central and Western, where JCPS lists all attending students as eligible. It is also different from resides school service, which covers students attending the school tied to their address.

Direct certification is not the same thing as districtwide free meals. JCPS is on the Community Eligibility Provision, so breakfast and lunch are free regardless of the Educational Benefits Form. School and Community Nutrition Services still asks families who are not directly certified to complete that form for other funding and benefits. If your Manual, Male, or Butler rider needs the Free and Reduced Lunch based bus category, confirm direct certification status with the school or Child Nutrition before you plan the year around a stop that never gets assigned.

Verification is part of eligibility in real life

JCPS told families every household must complete the Transportation Verification form, choosing bus rider, car rider, walker, or YMCA Childcare Enrichment Program. June 8, 2026 was the cutoff to request a bus for opening day, not a deadline that is still open. Eligible riders who missed that date were not guaranteed transportation for at least the first two weeks of the school year. School is underway now. A missing form still has to be filed before routing will match the current address.

Even midyear, the pattern is the same: eligibility on paper does not create a stop until transportation has your request and your current address. If you move, tell the school and update proof of address so routing matches where the student actually lives.

Families at Minor Daniels, Breckinridge Metropolitan, and TAPP should use the same portal and Bus Teller path unless the school has already written them about a stop. Early Childhood transportation is narrower. The Student Transportation Services page says those students are picked up and dropped off at the same address, and a parent, guardian, or authorized person 16 or older must meet the child. If that person is not there, the student is returned to school.

How to verify your child's status without guessing

Check whether the school is a resides assignment, a listed all student exception, a Free and Reduced Lunch limited magnet, or an IEP transportation case.

Complete or update the Transportation Verification form through the JCPS transportation portal.

Look up the stop in Bus Teller for bus number, stop location, and scheduled times.

Use My Ride K 12 for live tracking once the student is assigned. The app helps you see the bus. It does not invent eligibility or approve a different route.

If the app and the curb disagree, start with the school office, then Student Transportation Services at 502 485 3470. That page lists main office hours as 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and bus compound offices as 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. After the school day is underway, a compound office may answer route questions faster. Do not call 502 485 7433 for this. That is the 485 RIDE hotline, and JCPS scheduled it only for late July and the first days of school in August 2026.

For temporary changes such as riding home with a friend, JCPS says students ride their assigned buses and need written parent requests approved by the principal. Insider's guide to riding a different bus with a friend walks through that process. My Ride K 12 cannot approve the switch.

Shopping for 2027 to 2028

Magnet and academy shopping for 2027 to 2028 should include a transportation check before you fall in love with a campus. For demand context on magnets, see Insider's report on which magnets draw the most applications. A Manual seat without Free and Reduced Lunch direct certification is a family logistics plan, not a district bus plan, under the current published rules. A resides Academies of Louisville school is the broadest everyday path to eligibility. Central and Western are the clear whole school magnet exceptions on the current list.

Rules have changed more than once since 2024. Before you accept a seat or decline one over transportation, recheck the current first day eligibility list and ask the school to confirm your child's category in writing.

What changed: the triad is gone, resides is defined, SchoolFinder and the nutrition form page are linked, early childhood is sourced to the transportation page (same address and age 16 both stay), the “school will tell you” line for Minor Daniels, Breckinridge, and TAPP is cut, 502 485 3470 is cited with hours, and 485 RIDE is marked as the seasonal line. No TARC paragraph and no stipend section.
