Option 1 of 13
Find the school tied to your address
Every Louisville address has a resides elementary, middle, and high school. Start here before you apply anywhere else.
School Finder is JCPS’s tool. Results can change by school year. Use the year your child will actually enroll.
Official JCPS tool. We do not host the map.
How to read a School Finder result
Finder answers by address and by grade, so run it for the grade your child will be in. You will normally see one assigned school per level:
- Elementary. Your address sits in a cluster or a Choice Zone. Some addresses show one assigned elementary; others show a set you choose from.
- Middle. One assigned middle school, usually fed by your elementary. Programs inside that building — Explore Pathways, Montessori, Traditional — are a separate question from the assignment.
- High. One assigned Academies of Louisville high school. Districtwide magnets such as duPont Manual or Brown never appear as a resides result; those take an application.
If a result does not match what a neighbor told you, the Finder result for your address wins. Call School Choice at (502) 485-6250 if it still looks wrong.
Two schools on one address: dual resides and the Choice Zone
Some addresses have more than one option — a close-to-home school and one farther away. That is not an error. In those areas JCPS asks you to choose rather than handing you a single default, and transportation rules can differ between the two. School Finder is the source for whether your address works this way; we do not host that map.
When boundaries change
Boundary changes usually apply to students entering a new level — kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade. Children already enrolled in a building are often allowed to stay for a transition year rather than moved mid-stream, and transportation for that year is a separate question.
Nothing here is a promise for your address. If you hear that a boundary is moving, run Finder for the enrollment year and ask School Choice what happens to a child already in the building.
I found my school. Now what?
Staying at the assigned school
If your child is staying in the school tied to your address — or moving from fifth grade into the assigned middle school, or from eighth grade into the assigned Academies high school — you generally do not submit a magnet application.

You may need to pick close-to-home or far-away instead of accepting a default assignment. Confirm that map for your address.

Check the exact address before you sign. The closest JCPS school is not always the school that serves that address. Run School Finder on the year you will enroll.
Moved recently?
- Update your address with JCPS.
- Run School Finder again.
- See whether the assignment changed.
- See whether a new application is required.
Proof of residence must generally be current and show the parent/guardian name and address. JCPS examples include a utility bill, lease or closing statement, paycheck stub, or government correspondence. Confirm the current acceptable documents with JCPS — the list can change.
Families update household information in JCPS Parent Place.

What School Finder does not tell you
Finding your resides school does not tell you:
- Whether a magnet or other program is a better fit
- Whether transportation is available for another choice
- Whether you must submit an application for a specialized program
- Whether the school has the academics, activities, or athletics your child wants
Questions parents ask
Is my resides school always the closest school?
No. Use School Finder on the exact address. Do not assume by neighborhood or driving distance.
Do I have to apply to my resides school?
Usually no if you are staying in the assigned school or rising into the assigned middle / Academies high school. Yes if you want a magnet, another campus, or you are in the Choice Zone.
What if I moved?
Update the address with JCPS, run School Finder again, and check whether the assignment or application requirement changed.
What if I don’t want my resides school?
Use the application window and the School Choice page. Resides is the default, not the only option.
