Public charter schools

There are currently no operating JCPS charter schools for families to choose.

Kentucky has a charter-school statute, and JCPS publishes an authorizer process for operators. After the courts blocked public funding under House Bill 9, and after voters rejected a 2024 constitutional amendment that would have allowed public money outside the common-school system, applicants must show they can operate without a state funding stream. That process is not a list of schools parents can select.

Magnets are district-run specialized schools. Charters, if any ever open, would be independently operated public schools under a charter contract. Those are different structures. Today, JCPS choice for Louisville families runs through resides schools, network Academies schools, and magnets.
