What this school is

The Academy @ Shawnee sits at 4001 Herman Street, a few blocks south of the Ohio River in West Louisville. The building opened in 1927–28 as Shawnee High School — first as an all-girls school, co-educational after 1950 — and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (reference 84000277). JCPS later added a middle school in fall 2013 and rebranded the campus as The Academy @ Shawnee.

By square footage it is one of the largest high-school campuses in the district, at about 344,000 square feet. In practice, two different things live in one building: a neighborhood 6–12 school for many West End addresses, and a specialized aviation / career campus that families across Jefferson County apply to.

JCPS's High School Choices Guide says Shawnee is the only JCPS school offering the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) private-pilot-license course, with a full flight simulator and an on-site airplane hangar; Flight and Aeronautics is listed as a districtwide pathway. In August 2025, JCPS and the nonprofit Flight Club 502 launched a yearlong cohort at Bowman Field, sending about 17–19 Shawnee juniors and seniors to the airfield for core classes, FAA ground school, simulator time, and flight hours toward a private pilot license. Ask whether that cohort continues, how students are selected, and what costs families cover.

How families get in

Shawnee is not one door. Some students attend because it is their resides or Choice Zone school. Others apply for Flight and Aeronautics or another pathway. Rules for middle and high school are not identical, so read the current Choices Guide for your child's grade.

• Most recent on-time window (2026–27): November 3–December 19, 2025, with notices scheduled for April 2026. That window is closed; confirm 2027–28 dates on the JCPS calendar.
• New-to-JCPS students must register before they can apply. Late magnet applications are considered only if seats remain.
• Up to two magnet choices are allowed on a high-school application. Wait lists do not carry over to the next year.
• Choice Zone: incoming ninth graders who live in the zone must apply to pick a close-to-home or far-away option. For middle school, close-to-home options have included Hudson Middle or Academy @ Shawnee.
• Academies of Louisville: every student on an Academies campus is in an academy. Freshmen sample, then join a pathway. Applying to a non-resides Academies school can carry extra rules (the guide has listed a 2.0 GPA for some network lotteries — verify the current line).
• Flight and Aeronautics is a districtwide pathway; that matters for transportation planning, but it is not a guarantee that every aviation student gets a bus.

A seat does not automatically include a bus. Confirm current magnet and pathway transportation before you treat 8:40 a.m. on Herman Street as a done deal.

Who it tends to fit

Counts do not all come from the same snapshot. The 2026–27 High School Choices Guide lists 713 students in grades 9–12 and the Middle School guide lists 360 in grades 6–8. The JCPS 2025–26 Individual School Data Books list 551 high school and 333 middle school students (884 combined). NCES listed 1,051 for 2024–25.

Academics

Look at the Kentucky School Report Card first. Ranking websites do not use the same year or the same formula, and they disagree. Shawnee's own JCPS homepage posts these KDE-style bands.

• Reading, middle: 12% proficient / 3% distinguished. Reading, high: 11% proficient / 3% distinguished.
• Math, high: 4% proficient / 2% distinguished. Math, middle: not posted on the JCPS banner.
• U.S. News has used combined figures around 22% reading and 5% math. Public School Review puts graduation in the 80–84% range and overall scores in the bottom half of Kentucky. SchoolDigger has ranked the high school near the bottom of the state list.
• The 2025–26 data book also flags a KDE indicator rating in the low / red band. Shawnee has been in state improvement / diagnostic review cycles; Cognia reviewed the high school in December 2024 and the middle school in January 2026. Treat rankings as secondary — the official report card is the one to cite in an application conversation.

Location and daily life

Herman Street is in the Shawnee neighborhood, west of downtown, near 40th Street — convenient if you already travel that corridor, and a different calculation if you live in the East End or far South End and need a bus that may or may not be assigned. Start time is 8:40 a.m. for both middle and high school on the 2025–26 data book.

School-day texture from the school's own posts and local coverage includes football against Central, a new turf field (June 2024), basketball, Rocket League esports, JROTC, an on-site pool, and aviation time that may be on Herman Street or at Bowman Field. Ask how a Flight 502 student gets to the airport and back, and whether after-school care or late activity buses exist this year.
