Fern Creek is a southeast Louisville Academies of Louisville high school — not one of the eight districtwide magnets. If School Finder lists it as your resides campus, you enroll. Pathways include fire science with the Fern Creek Fire Department, Marine Corps JROTC, culinary, and media. Published KSA bands sit in the lower-middle of the JCPS pack. The pitch is career academies and an 8:40 start, not Manual's test profile. JCPS Insider is not affiliated with Jefferson County Public Schools.

What this school is
Fern Creek opened in 1923 at 9115 Fern Creek Road. Colors are orange and black. Teams are the Tigers. It is a Network 2 Academies of Louisville resides school with Jeffersontown, Marion C. Moore, Seneca, and Southern. Board member: Taylor Everett. The school lists itself as a Model Professional Learning Community.
After the Freshman Academy, three academies: Communications (cinematography and video production, graphic design, management and entrepreneurship); Education, Community, and Service (culinary, early childhood, consumer and family services, Marine Corps JROTC); Engineering, Computer Science, and Skilled Trades (computer science, automation engineering, plumber assistant, fire science / firefighting with weekly Fern Creek Fire Department training).
Fern Creek ran a locked phone-pouch policy before the districtwide ban. Principal Nicolas told WLKY in 2025 that phones stay in pouches until dismissal. Ask the current office whether that system is still in use in 2026–27. It is a parent-relevant culture question, not a ranking.
Who runs the building
Jarrod Hunt
Jarrod Hunt is listed as principal on the current JCPS school homepage. JCPS announced a new Fern Creek principal on May 27, 2026. The 2025–26 data book still names Rebecca Nicolas. Confirm the current staff directory.

How families get in
Fern Creek is not on the districtwide magnet list with Manual, Male, Butler, Central, Brown, or Western. It is a resides Academies of Louisville high school in Network 2. Use School Finder. If Fern Creek is the campus tied to your address, you enroll — you do not enter the magnet lottery for a seat in the building.
- If this is your resides school: register first if the child is new to JCPS, then enroll at Fern Creek.
- Choice Zone families still pick close-to-home or far-away. Confirm that map for your address.
- Academy pathways are chosen after ninth grade. The Freshman Academy is the on-ramp.
- Fire-science and JROTC seats are not automatic. Ask which sections actually ran last year.
- If this is not your resides school: apply in the JCPS window as an in-network Academies request or a transfer — not as one of the eight magnet high schools. Fern Creek is Network 2.
- A 2.0 GPA is often cited for Academies lottery eligibility. Confirm the current Choices Guide.
- Do not assume transportation. Resides busing follows district rules for this address; transfers often do not.
About Marine Corps JROTC here
- JROTC at Fern Creek is a pathway inside the Education, Community, and Service academy — not a separate military high school.
- A seat in the building does not automatically mean a seat in JROTC.
- Ask how JROTC placement works for resides, network, and transfer students this year.
Who it tends to fit
A good match when
- School Finder lists Fern Creek as the resides campus.
- Fire science, culinary, media, or Marine JROTC is the reason.
- An 8:40 southeast-Louisville start is workable.
- A mid-size comprehensive school (about 1,400) sounds right.
Think twice when
- You are choosing only on published KSA bands.
- You want Manual, Male, or Atherton IB.
- You assumed Fern Creek is a districtwide magnet school.
- Transfer transportation is the only way the commute works.

November 6, 2024 — weapon in a backpack. A gun was found in a student's backpack by the school's weapons-detection system, and the student was arrested. Principal Nicolas told families the scanners are part of daily arrival. Ask what the 2026–27 arrival screen looks like.
