Jefferson County Public Schools opens applications for the 2027 to 2028 school year on Monday, November 2, 2026, and closes them Friday, December 18, 2026. That window covers elementary, middle and high school, according to the district's Student Assignment page.

Most rank list mistakes happen before a parent clicks anything. They come from rules that sit on separate JCPS pages and never show up on the application screen. Every rule below comes from district pages checked October 13, 2026.

Does submitting on November 2 help?

No. The Student Assignment page says applications are not handled first come, first served. "They all are processed at the same time at the end of the period."

That means there's no reason to rush on day one, and some reason not to. Use the first weeks to check the rules below, then submit before December 18. Applications after the deadline are processed "based on building capacity and admission criteria," the same page says.

Which school does your address already get?

Start with the school your child is assigned to without applying at all. JCPS calls it the resides school, and you can look it up on the district's SchoolFinder or by calling the JCPS GIS Office at 502 485 3050.

That school is your fallback. Every rank list decision is really a comparison against it.

Some families don't need to apply at all. The Middle and High Schools and Programs page says current JCPS fifth and eighth graders who aren't interested in specialized schools or programs "do not need to register or apply." They are enrolled automatically in the middle or high school that serves their home address.

Do you live in the Choice Zone?

If you do, the rules change. The same page says students in the designated Choice Zone entering sixth or ninth grade will be required to choose between a close to home school and a far away school.

For elementary, the Elementary School Choices page says Choice Zone families must choose between the close to home and far away options before they begin ranking. Incoming kindergartners, students new to JCPS, and Choice Zone students with an address change must complete an application to make that selection.

Skipping this step isn't the same as choosing the closer school. If SchoolFinder puts you in the Choice Zone, plan on filing.

How does elementary ranking actually work?

Elementary is the only level where you rank a whole zone. The Elementary School Choices page says you will be asked to rank schools in your designated zone by order of preference, and you can also apply for up to two other options, such as a magnet school or a magnet program inside a school.

The district also says it considers "parental choice, space, a student's home address, and the diversity of the student body when placing students at schools." It adds, "Due to capacity constraints, not all families can or will receive their first school choice."

So rank every school in your zone as if you could end up at the bottom one. Because you could.

Siblings come with a condition. The district's Elementary Schools and Programs page says School Choice keeps siblings together in zone schools "when parents indicate the sibling's school as their first choice." So if an older child already attends a zone school, rank that school first. The same page says that because of boundary changes the Jefferson County Board of Education passed in June 2022, some siblings may still be separated, and those families can apply for a student transfer. Magnet rules are different, and that's the next trap.

Do siblings get preference at a magnet?

No. The Elementary School Choices page says siblings of current or former magnet school students "do not receive preference in the application process." Twins, triplets and other students with the same date of birth are treated as one application, but you still submit a separate application for each child.

If an older child already attends a magnet, don't assume the younger one follows.

How many magnet applications can you file?

One per year. The district's magnet rules on the Elementary School Choices page, which also appear in the 2026 to 2027 Elementary Choices guide, say "Students may submit one magnet application per year," and that submitting false information "will void an application." That one application can list up to two choices.

Two more rules on that list matter for timing. Magnet applications can only be edited during the regular application window. And "Waiting lists are not kept from year to year."

If you want to change a choice, do it by December 18. After that, you can't.

Will a second choice get a wait list number?

No. The district's Optional and Magnet Lottery Wait List page says, "Second choice selections and late magnet applications are not included in the wait list and will be reviewed based on building capacity and program need."

That one sentence changes how you should think about your second line. A second choice is a seat if one is left, not a place in line.

Does a bus come with the school you're ranking?

Not always. JCPS's April 13, 2026 transportation notice lists who is eligible for buses in 2026 to 2027. It includes students at their resides school, all students at Central High and Western High, and all students at Coleridge Taylor Montessori and Johnson Traditional Middle, among others.

At Butler Traditional High, Louisville Male High and duPont Manual High, eligibility is limited to "Students who are directly certified for Free and Reduced Lunch." Students with transportation written into an IEP are covered separately.

Those are 2026 to 2027 rules, and the district hasn't published 2027 to 2028 transportation rules on the pages we checked. Still, if your plan only works with a district bus, check the current list before you rank a school that isn't on it. Our bus eligibility guide has the full breakdown.

When will you hear back?

Later than many parents expect. The Optional and Magnet Lottery Wait List page gives the 2027 to 2028 timeline, and it's the same at every level. First choice selection runs January 3 to February 4, 2027. Second choice processing runs February 5 to March 4, 2027. Elementary zone assignments begin March 6, 2027, and elementary magnet wait list letters go out the week of March 1, 2027.

For middle and high school magnets that use a lottery, the same page says families will get a letter with their child's wait list number for first choice applications the week of March 8, 2027. That only covers traditional magnets at those levels.

If you are holding a private school deposit decision or a move, put those dates on the calendar now.

What if you're new to JCPS or moving here?

A child who has never attended a JCPS school has to register before applying. The Middle and High Schools and Programs page says to use the application link to register first.

Timing is tighter for families already here. The same page says students new to the district may apply until December of the current school year, though choices may be limited outside the application period. But current JCPS students and private school students in Jefferson County "cannot apply after the first day of school."

Who do you call before you submit?

The JCPS Office of School Choice is at 502 485 6250 and jcpsschoolchoice@jefferson.kyschools.us. For which school serves your address, the GIS Office is at 502 485 3050.
