If the YMCA Child Enrichment Program at your child's school has no seat, the next CEP site may still work, as long as a JCPS bus can get your child there. The YMCA's 2026 to 2027 transportation list matches every JCPS school with the CEP sites its students can ride to, and one line at the top could matter more than anything below it: "Transportation provided only for resides/zone school."

Magnet and transfer families should read that line twice. We checked every page below on October 29, 2026.

Why can't I get a CEP spot at my child's school?

The Child Enrichment Program, run by the YMCA of Greater Louisville with Jefferson County Public Schools for kindergarten through eighth grade, caps each site. The district's CEP page says registration is open all school year and "all sites have minimum and maximum enrollment numbers." It asks families to register online at least two business days before a child's start date. The district's 2026 to 2027 family calendar adds that spaces go first come, first served, and lists the JCPS CEP line, 502 485 3834.

JCPS doesn't post which sites are at their maximum. The fastest way to find out is to call the site. The YMCA's CEP page lists a direct number for each of its 39 school sites, from Alex R. Kennedy at 502 471 0265 to Wilder at 502 471 4039. The School Age Child Care Services Branch, which handles registration, is at 502 637 1575.

Not every school has CEP. The transportation list marks Barrett and Jefferson County Traditional Middle as "NO CEP."

Can my child ride a JCPS bus to a CEP site at another school?

Often, yes. The YMCA list gives most JCPS schools between one and eight CEP sites. Atkinson Elementary, for example, lists Hite, Lowe, Stopher, Middletown, Bowen, Lincoln, Coleridge Taylor and Foster. Blue Lick lists only Laukhuf.

Two labels on that list matter:

  • "AM/PM" means the site can take your child before school and after school.

  • "PM Only" means after school only. If you need morning care, that site won't solve it.

The pattern follows bell times. Schools on the 7:30 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. schedule mostly show PM Only sites, while 9:40 a.m. schools are more likely to show AM/PM.

Then there's that top line. The list doesn't explain "resides/zone school," and neither does the CEP page. Read plainly, it means the bus ride to another CEP site is for students attending the school their address assigns them. If your child attends a magnet or holds a transfer, don't assume a bus will take them to any site on the list. Call 502 637 1575 and ask before you register.

What does CEP cost this year?

The YMCA says weekly rates "start at $63 per child," but that's the starting rate, and the Y says members pay less. JCPS lists a $45 registration fee per child. JCPS says the rate for in service and snow days alone is $36 per day, per child. The district's CEP page links a separate 2026 to 2027 weekly rate sheet, but it wouldn't open for us, so call your site for the exact weekly price. The Y offers income based assistance. JCPS says CEP also accepts 3C and other third party subsidy reimbursements, though the Y's own assistance may not combine with another subsidy. Payment drafts every Wednesday. If your child will miss a registered week, JCPS says to notify the office a week before that session to stop the draft, or there's no refund. A child who attends a different session than the one registered for is charged an overage on the next draft.

Late pickup is expensive. The YMCA's school age FAQ says the program ends at 6 p.m. and a late fee of "$1.00 per minute, per child begins at 6:01 pm."

Kentucky's Child Care Assistance Program helps eligible families pay for child care, with a copay based on income. Apply through kynect or by phone at 855 306 8959, according to the state's CCAP page.

Can JCPS bus my child to a day care instead?

Sometimes, through a transfer. The JCPS registration and application page describes a Before School/After School Care Transfer for a family whose "childcare provider lives in another zone" and whose child "needs bus transportation from the childcare provider's address to a new school." JCPS asks you to include the provider's address and says "sometimes we can move the child to a school in the zone, other than the ones requested."

That means the fix may be a new school, not a new bus stop.

The 2026 to 2027 transfer window runs through Friday, March 5, 2027. JCPS says processing takes 15 to 20 days, approval isn't guaranteed, and "Transportation may not be provided." Child care transfers share second priority with start time transfers, behind sibling transfers. Transfer questions go to jcps.student-transfers@jefferson.kyschools.us or 502 485 6250.

JCPS has narrowed day care busing before. WAVE News reported in August 2024 that day cares would get JCPS transportation only from resides schools near them, plus a few schools grandfathered in for one more year, and that JCPS wasn't guaranteeing door to door drop off. JCPS hasn't posted a newer day care busing rule that we could find, so ask the center whether JCPS buses actually stop there this year.

Who can help me find a center that picks up from my school?

Community Coordinated Child Care, known as 4C, runs a free child care referral service for Louisville. Its referral form asks about your work and home schedules, your commute and "whether you need transportation for your child," and a specialist emails you a list of state regulated providers. 4C says it doesn't license or recommend any provider. Its number is 502 636 1358.

When you call a center, ask three things: whether its van picks up at your child's school, what it charges per week, and whether it's open on JCPS days off.

Are Boys and Girls Clubs an option?

For kids 6 and older, yes. Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana serves ages 6 to 18 and runs three Louisville clubs:

  • Parkland Club, 3200 Greenwood Avenue, 502 365 1522.

  • Newburg Club, 5020 East Indian Trail, 502 690 3402.

  • Shawnee Club, 317 North 38th Street, 502 774 5437.

The Clubs' site doesn't post a 2026 to 2027 after school fee or a list of schools it transports from. Call the club before you enroll and ask about both.

What if I only need care on days JCPS is closed?

The Y covers some of those days at fewer sites. Its CEP page lists in service day care at Bates, Bloom, Bowen, Carter, Fairdale, Greathouse, Hite, Jeffersontown, Norton, Schaffner, Smyrna and Stopher, with preregistration required. Snow day care runs 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Audubon, Bates, Cane Run, Chancey, Dunn, Fairdale, Hite, Lincoln, St. Matthews and Tully for registered children. On those days, JCPS says, getting your child to the site is your job. Winter Break, Spring Break and summer care each need a separate registration.

Start with two calls: your CEP site's direct number to ask about a seat, and 502 637 1575 to ask whether your child's school, resides or not, gets a bus to another site.
