A child who is 5, or will turn 5 by August 1, 2027, can start kindergarten in Jefferson County Public Schools in the 2027 to 2028 school year. That cutoff comes from Kentucky law, KRS 158.030, which says such a child "may enter a primary school program."

For families of children born in the late summer and fall of 2022, the more urgent date is this Saturday. The fall testing deadline for JCPS Early Entrance to Kindergarten is October 31, 2026, before 4 PM, according to the district's Early Admission to Kindergarten page, rechecked October 18, 2026.

Is kindergarten required in Kentucky?

Kindergarten is open to every 5 year old, but attendance becomes mandatory at 6. KRS 158.030 says a child who is 6, or turns 6 by August 1, "shall attend public school or qualify for an exemption." The statute moved that date from October 1 to August 1 beginning in the 2017 to 2018 school year. The Kentucky Department of Education's enrollment FAQ says Kentucky children must be enrolled in and attend school between the ages of 6 and 18.

Once a child has entered the primary program, the state's compulsory attendance law, KRS 159.010, applies to "any child who has entered the primary school program." In plain terms, enrolling a 5 year old in kindergarten means regular attendance rules apply from that point.

What if my child turns 5 after August 1, 2027?

JCPS has an Early Entrance to Kindergarten process for advanced children with fall birthdays. The district's Early Admission to Kindergarten page calls it a form of whole grade acceleration.

The legal hook is in the same statute. KRS 158.030(3) requires every local school board to adopt a policy letting a parent or guardian petition the board for a child who doesn't meet the age rule, and says that policy "shall include an evaluation process that will help determine a student's readiness for school."

To be eligible for 2027 to 2028, the page says a child must:

  1. Be a resident of Jefferson County.

  2. Turn 5 between August 2 and October 31, 2027.

  3. Score at or above the 84th percentile on district scales for academic and social emotional development.

  4. Score at or above the 84th percentile on a district intelligence assessment.

  5. Score in the goal range on a district self help survey.

All five apply. A summer birthday alone doesn't qualify a child, and a strong preschool report doesn't either.

When are the early entrance deadlines?

There are two testing windows. The district page says that children who meet the criteria and have a completed application before 4 PM on October 31, 2026 will be tested in person from September to December 2026. The final deadline is April 1, 2027, before 4 PM, with testing from March to May 2027.

The page also says the form "does not guarantee testing or early entrance to kindergarten. This form is only an application for potential testing." It asks families to read the JCPS Early Entrance to Kindergarten Policy, on page 4 of the posted document, before applying. Questions go to jcpsgifted@jefferson.kyschools.us.

Applying this week gets a fall test date and an answer earlier in the year. Waiting until spring means testing that can run as late as May, while elementary zone assignments begin March 6, 2027.

How do you register a kindergartner?

Every incoming kindergartner has to register first, even if an older sibling already attends JCPS. The district's New Students page says students who haven't attended a JCPS school, "including all incoming kindergartners, must register online, at any JCPS elementary school, or at the Office of School Choice."

You'll need proof that you live in Jefferson County. The same page lists accepted documents, including "an LG&E or water bill, a paycheck or paycheck stub, a lease, or SSI or other government benefit award letter."

After registration is processed, the page says, you'll get an activation key to open the application for an elementary zone, Choice Zone, or magnet schools and programs.

The same page says you may register your child "regardless of immigration status and/or a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence." Families in a shelter, a motel, or a relative's home because of hardship may qualify for help from the Office of Access and Opportunity at 502 485 3650.

Do you still have to apply after registering?

Yes. Registration isn't a school assignment. The district's Elementary Schools and Programs page says, "An application must be submitted in order to receive an elementary assignment."

The New Students page lists elementary students "entering kindergarten for the first time" among the few groups that must apply. That's different from middle and high school, where current JCPS students are placed at the school serving their address without an application.

The initial elementary application period for 2027 to 2028 is November 2 through December 18, 2026, according to the Elementary Schools and Programs page. The district says it continues "accepting registrations and applications year round for eligible students," but families who apply during the initial window are processed together. Applications that come in later are handled based on space.

What does the kindergarten application ask you to do?

You rank the schools in your elementary zone. The district's Elementary School Choices page says you'll rank zone schools "by order of preference" and can apply for up to two other options, such as a magnet school or program. Choice Zone families pick close to home or far away first.

Siblings come with a condition. The Elementary Schools and Programs page says School Choice keeps siblings together in zone schools "when parents indicate the sibling's school as their first choice." If an older child attends a zone school, rank that school first. It doesn't apply to magnets. The page says siblings of magnet students "do not receive preference."

Find your zone and schools on the district's SchoolFinder or by calling the JCPS GIS Office at 502 485 3050. Our guide to finding your JCPS zoned school walks through it.

When will you know which school?

Not until spring. Magnet choices come first. The Elementary Schools and Programs page says they "are considered before the elementary zone assignments are processed," and that all elementary magnet admissions are decided by lottery. The district's wait list page says elementary zone assignments for 2027 to 2028 begin March 6, 2027. First choice magnet selection runs January 3 to February 4, and second choice selection runs February 5 to March 4.

If you're comparing a private kindergarten deposit or a preschool contract with a spring deadline, check those dates against March 6 now.

What about preschool for a 4 year old?

JCPS also runs Early Childhood programs for 4 year olds. The New Students page says full day, half day, and home based programs are available, and that some are free while others charge tuition. That's a separate application from kindergarten. Ask the Office of School Choice which programs your child qualifies for.

Who can help you register?

The JCPS Office of School Choice is at 4309 Bishop Lane, Louisville, KY 40218, and 502 485 6250. Email is jcpsschoolchoice@jefferson.kyschools.us. If your child has a birthday between August 2 and October 31, 2022, and you think early entrance fits, submit the testing application before 4 PM on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
