JCPS does not charge one universal school fee. What a family sees depends on the school, grade, course and activity.
The current Board records show how wide that range can be. The September 1 correction sheet lists Seneca cheer at $800, Seneca girls basketball at $500, Seneca volleyball at $500 and a $20 Southern High yearbook class fee. Elsewhere in the same Board packet, Atherton Band is listed at $100, Noe Band at $75 and Seneca Theater or Drama at $300.
Those figures come from the Jefferson County Board of Education's September 1 packet under Recommendation for Approval of Updated School Fees for 2026 to 2027. JCPS said the update was needed because of a clerical error in the original approval.
The packet includes the 2026 to 2027 Schools Fee Correction, the 2026 to 2027 School Student Fees New and Revised and the March 2026 School Fees Guidelines.
The two fee attachments do not match on every Seneca line. Parents checking a Seneca charge should look at both and ask the school to show the Board approved entry being used.
JCPS says schools must submit anticipated fees for Board approval and cannot collect a new fee, including one for a new sport or activity, before that approval. The March guidelines also say any fee collected without required approval must be refunded.
The September 1 Board recommendation says fees generally are due at registration, but schools will work with parents if a payment plan is needed.
Free meals do not automatically settle the fee waiver question
All JCPS students are eligible for breakfast and lunch at no cost under the district's Community Eligibility program. JCPS also encourages families to complete the Educational Benefits Form because the information is used to determine eligibility for other benefits and school funding.
Free meals alone do not tell a family whether a particular school fee will be waived. JCPS directs kindergarten through grade 12 families who are not directly certified to complete the Educational Benefits Form. Parents can complete the EBF at jcps.me/EBF.
Kentucky requires districts to waive applicable fees for students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch benefits. The mandatory waiver includes charges for school property, field trips that fall at least partly within the school day, required class supplies and materials, general activity fees and other required school charges that are not exempted.
The rule does not require the same treatment for every extracurricular bill. Activities taking place outside the normal school day and having no effect on graduation or instructional course credit can fall outside the mandatory waiver.
JCPS's September 1 Board materials use broader language. They say approved fees are not charged to students who have completed and approved Instructional Fee Waiver Request Forms on file. The public materials do not explain in detail how that statement is applied to every extracurricular charge that could fall within the state exception.
A family looking at an $800 cheer fee or a $500 sports fee should ask rather than assume. Complete the Educational Benefits Form if needed, request the Instructional Fee Waiver Request Form from the school and ask whether the waiver applies to that specific charge.
How to find the approved fee for your school
Start with the September 1 new and revised school fee list and search for your child's school name.
Then check the September 1 correction sheet before treating either amount as final.
The March 2026 School Fees Guidelines explain the district rules behind those charges, including Board approval requirements and academic fee standards.
If the school office cannot show where a charge was approved, ask for the exact Board approved fee entry. JCPS Financial Services lists 502 485 3200 as its division phone number.
Not every request for money is a school fee
JCPS defines a school fee as an amount charged to a student that has Board approval and provides a like kind service or item to the student group.
The district's guidelines include team league fees, team membership fees, required team uniforms, course fees, class dues, parking, supplementary materials and Board approved field trip fees among examples that can count as fees.
Other payments are treated differently. The guidelines list bookstore or spirit shop purchases, concessions, season tickets, certain individual organization memberships, optional purchases, some fundraisers and restitution among examples that are not school fees.
A charge appearing in MySchoolBucks does not by itself establish that it is a required Board approved school fee. JCPS Insider's complete JCPS parent app and login guide explains how MySchoolBucks fits among the district's other parent accounts.
The academic fee chart does not explain every current charge
JCPS's March 2026 guidelines set academic fee standards.
The maximum for supplementary materials is $25 in elementary school and $20 in middle school. At the high school level, the combined supplementary materials fee for the four required core content areas is capped at $40. The published standard for noncore electives in middle and high school is $65.
The same guidelines say academic fees cannot be raised above those standards and that all academic fees reported by schools must comply with them.
Then look at the current Board fee list.
Atherton Band is labeled Elective Curriculum at $100. Noe Band is labeled Elective Curriculum at $75. Seneca Theater or Drama is labeled Elective Curriculum at $300.
The public documents reviewed by JCPS Insider do not explain how those amounts fit the published $65 standard or whether part of those charges is being treated differently.
That is not enough information to conclude that any school is charging an improper fee. It is enough to justify a question.
If your child's academic course fee exceeds the published standard, ask the school what the charge covers and how it fits the JCPS academic fee guidelines.
A child cannot be kept off a field trip because the family cannot pay
JCPS's field trip procedure says no student may be excluded from a field trip because of an inability to pay. It also says a school must provide funding for a student who is eligible for a fee waiver and directs parents to the JCPS Instructional Fee Waiver Request Form.
Kentucky's fee waiver regulation also requires waiver of charges for field trips when any portion falls within the school day.
A parent who cannot afford the trip should ask the school about the waiver before assuming the child has to stay home.
Three questions to ask before paying a confusing charge
What is the exact name of this fee, and where is it listed in the current Board approved records?
What exactly does the fee pay for, especially if an academic charge is above the published JCPS academic fee standard?
Does my child's approved fee waiver apply to this specific charge?
