What this school is

Seneca opened in 1957 at 3510 Goldsmith Lane and is home of the RedHawks. It is a resides high school and an Academies of Louisville campus — not a districtwide magnet, so there is no districtwide academic magnet lottery for a general seat here.

The unusual part is agriculture. Ag Power, Animal Science, Environmental Science, and Plant Science are districtwide pathways, which means a student anywhere in Jefferson County can apply for one of those seats even when Seneca is not the resides school. Health Science (including Sports Medicine) and the Innovate academy follow the ordinary resides and in-network rules.

How families get in

Three paths. Path A: School Finder says Seneca is the resides high school — register. Path B: you live in the same network and want Seneca instead of your assigned school — apply as an in-network Academies request. Path C: Ag Power, Animal Science, Environmental Science, or Plant Science — those four are districtwide, so a student anywhere in JCPS can apply. Other out-of-network seats are a transfer, not a magnet.

• If you want Ag Power, Animal Science, Environmental Science, or Plant Science from across the county, apply as a districtwide pathway.

• Every incoming ninth-grader starts in Freshman Academy and takes Career Choices 101, then applies into a pathway. Pathway seats are not automatic.
• Tour the greenhouse or the health lab, and watch the response deadline if a seat is offered.
