Students are off Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3. The 2027 to 2028 school choice application window opens Monday and runs through Friday, December 18, 2026. And Tuesday is Election Day, with Board of Education seats on the ballot and polls open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Classes resume Wednesday, November 4. That same day, the first evening open houses of the application window begin, and the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) reviews new statewide student performance data.
Is there school on November 2 and 3?
No. The district's 2026 to 2027 parent calendar, rechecked October 30, lists Monday, November 2, as a professional development Gold Day for teachers only and Tuesday, November 3, as Election Day with no school for students. Students return Wednesday, November 4. If you need child care, our guide to the two days off lists day camps and other plans.
When can you apply for a 2027 to 2028 JCPS school?
The elementary, middle and high school application period runs Monday, November 2, through Friday, December 18, 2026, according to the district's Student Assignment page, checked October 30. Applications go through the Landing Pad, which says students new to the district must register before they apply.
There's no reason to rush Monday morning. The Student Assignment page says applications aren't processed first come, first served, and those submitted after December 18 are processed based on building capacity and admission criteria.

Polls are open Tuesday, November 3, 2026, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Clerk's in person voting page, checked October 30. The same page lists the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center South Wing, Door E19, 937 Phillips Lane, as a walk in or drive through site open to all precincts and all voters on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. To find your own polling place, use the clerk's Where Do I Vote / Sample Ballot tool.

Is the JCPS board meeting this week?
No. The Jefferson County Board of Education has no business meeting, work session, committee meeting or special called meeting posted for November 1 to 7 on the KSBA public board portal or the district's events calendar, both checked October 30.
The next meeting is a work session Tuesday, November 10, at 6 p.m. Eastern in Stewart Auditorium at the VanHoose Education Center, 3332 Newburg Road. The November 10 agenda is already posted. It says the public may attend in person or watch the live stream on the district's YouTube channel, and that each speaker gets three minutes. The agenda doesn't say how to sign up to speak.
Proposed school calendars. The Board will receive proposed 2027 to 2028 and 2028 to 2029 calendars for first reading. It can't adopt them that night; Board Policy 08.3 requires a second meeting. The 2027 to 2028 draft shows students starting Thursday, August 5, 2027, fall break September 27 to October 1, winter break December 20 to 31, spring break April 3 to 7, 2028, and a last student day of Friday, May 19, 2028. Those are proposals, not final dates.
2027 Board meeting schedule. Superintendent Brian Yearwood recommends approval of 15 regular meetings next year, all at 6 p.m. at VanHoose.
Struggling schools. A consent item on the November 10 agenda asks the Board to approve turnaround team forms for 14 schools identified for Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI), the state's lowest performing category, including Iroquois High, Stuart Academy and Thomas Jefferson Middle. A separate item would restore the School Based Decision Making Council (SBDM) at Sanders Elementary, which that agenda item says exited CSI status on October 3, 2024.
Seneca High construction. A revised state building form in the November 10 agenda packet, for the new Seneca High School building, cites "unforeseen subsurface rock conditions" that required significant extra excavation.
All four sit on the consent calendar, which is usually approved in one vote unless a Board member pulls an item.
What is the Kentucky Board of Education doing Wednesday?
The KBE holds a regular meeting Wednesday, November 4, at 9 a.m. Eastern on Microsoft Teams, according to its KSBA meeting page. The main review item is the state's 2025 to 2026 student performance data. The agenda doesn't list a public comment period.
What else is on the JCPS calendar?
The high school grading period ends Thursday, November 5, and high school report cards go out Monday, November 16, according to the district calendar. If your teen is close to failing a class, this week is the time to ask the teacher what can still be made up.
The fall deadline for early entrance to kindergarten testing passed Saturday, October 31. The district's Early Admission to Kindergarten page, checked October 30, says applications are still accepted until April 1, 2027, before 4 p.m., with spring testing March through May 2027. Our kindergarten 2027 guide covers the regular age cutoff.
What happened since last week?
The District Facilities Local Planning Committee was scheduled to vote October 27 on a change to the long range building plan. As of October 30, the committee's KSBA page showed no minutes or result, and the November 10 Board agenda has no facilities plan item. We'll report the outcome when it posts.
