How families get in

If Kammerer is your resides middle school, you do not submit a magnet application to attend. Fifth-graders already in JCPS move automatically unless they live in a Choice Zone or apply somewhere else. Confirm the address in School Finder.

  • Resides assignment: elementary feeders reported include Dunn, Norton, Norton Commons, and King. That list is a starting point — run the current address. The Choices feeder chart sends Kammerer to Ballard High at 100%.
  • Explore Pathways are for students who already attend. Families do not apply separately for Explore. NCAC status does not change that.
  • Student transfer is a different form and is not guaranteed. Transportation may not be provided.
  • Magnet application is for other campuses. Kammerer itself is not a districtwide magnet.

The 2026–27 magnet window for other schools was November 3–December 19, 2025. That window is closed.

Who it tends to fit

A good match when

  • Kammerer is your resides school and you want Explore Pathways with a national career-academy stamp, plus band/orchestra and a long sports list, without a lottery.
  • Ballard is the high school you already expect.
  • East-end commute is already your life.

Think twice when

  • You want a Traditional magnet culture (Barret, JCTMS, Johnson) or a whole-school arts campus.
  • State scores are the only filter — Kammerer sits mid-pack, not with Crosby or Echo Trail.
  • You assumed NCAC accreditation was a magnet application.

Recent news, in context

June 2025: Kammerer earned NCAC Model Academy status — the first U.S. middle school with that career-academy stamp.

August 13, 2026: before the first bell, the school's weapons-detection system flagged an item in a student's backpack. Staff secured the bag, and JCPS Police responded. The principal's letter to families said the school otherwise ran a normal day.

JCPS posts school-level suspension totals, and those numbers move from year to year. Ask how arrival screening works now, and tour the drone lab and an ordinary Explore classroom on the same visit.
