What this school is
Crosby Middle opened in 1974 in Middletown and is named for James ("Fessor") Crosby, a longtime principal at Middletown Elementary. The campus sits at 303 Gatehouse Lane, ZIP 40243 — east Jefferson County, not West End, not downtown.
This is a neighborhood middle school first. JCPS lists Crosby among Explore Pathways schools, not among districtwide magnet campuses (Brown, Western Arts, the Traditional magnets). Families who live in the Crosby resides area do not apply to get in. Families outside that area need a transfer or another official assignment path. Some incoming sixth-graders near Interstate 265 were rezoned here from Echo Trail for 2026–27.

Listed as principal on the current JCPS Crosby staff directory. Assistant principals listed there: Greg Lauder and Keri White. Counselors are assigned by grade (6th, 7th, 8th). Family letters on the school's live feed in August 2026 are signed Clay Ryan. Confirm the name on the school site before you rely on a directory — a prior Choices Guide named a different principal.

How families get in
If Crosby is your resides middle school, you do not submit a magnet application. Fifth-graders already in JCPS are assigned automatically unless they live in a Choice Zone or apply somewhere else. Confirm the address in School Finder — east-county lines moved in 2025.
- Magnet application is for other campuses (Traditional magnets, Brown, Western Arts, listed magnet programs). Crosby itself is not a districtwide magnet.
- Explore Pathways are for students who attend Crosby. JCPS says families do not apply separately for Explore.
- DMS and Advance Program sit inside the building. A 2025 parent meeting described smaller programs as application-based even when Crosby is the resides school. Ask the school which tracks still require a form.
- Student transfer is a different form, with different dates, and is not guaranteed. Transportation may not be provided.
- 2026–27 magnet window (for other schools) was November 3–December 19, 2025. That window is closed. Confirm 2027–28 dates on the JCPS calendar.
Echo Trail overflow, approved November 18, 2025
- Echo Trail was over its 1,044-student capacity (about 1,188 enrolled).
- The board voted to send incoming sixth-graders and new students living near Interstate 265 to Crosby instead, starting the next school year.
- Students already at Echo Trail stay. JCPS said Crosby was running at about 75% of building capacity and is about 15 minutes away.

Who it tends to fit
A good match when
- Crosby is your resides school and you want to stay in Middletown / Douglass Hills / the Gatehouse corridor.
- Your student wants DMS math, band/orchestra/piano, or Explore Pathways without entering a magnet lottery.
- You want a mid-size 6–8 (about 775 students) that still has unused capacity — unlike Echo Trail next door.
Think twice when
- You want a Traditional magnet culture (Barret, JCTMS, Johnson) or a whole-school theme campus.
- You do not live in the Crosby area and are counting on a transfer plus a bus.
- You are comparing only to Echo Trail on raw proficiency. Confirm both report cards for the same year before drawing conclusions.
Oct. 1, 2025 enrollment file: 775 students (273 sixth, 256 seventh, 246 eighth). The 2026–27 Choices Guide lists 754. The Courier-Journal said Crosby used to enroll more than 1,000 before assignment-plan changes.

Location and daily life
Gatehouse Lane is in Middletown / Douglass Hills, east Jefferson County. Convenient if you already travel Shelbyville Road, I-265, or the Eastern High corridor. August 2026 family letters note doors at 8:00 a.m., a day running 8:40–3:20, and that the Douglass Hills Condominium lot is not a drop-off.
The school posts a uniform dress code; ask for the current flyer rather than relying on an older list.
Recent news, in context
In October–November 2025, JCPS proposed moving some new sixth-graders from overcrowded Echo Trail to Crosby. Parents objected. The board approved the district map on November 18, 2025. Incoming sixth-graders and new students near I-265 go to Crosby; current Echo Trail students stay. A board member noted Crosby's enrollment had already dropped because some families who used to be sent here now choose West End options under the assignment plan.
That is a capacity story, not a test-score story. If you bought a house 'for Echo Trail,' run School Finder again before sixth grade.
