What this school is
Echo Trail opened in August 2023 as the first new middle school in eastern Jefferson County since 2008 and the first new JCPS middle school in about 30 years. JRA Architects designed three barn-like pavilions on a plateau across from the Parklands at Floyds Fork — about 141,000–161,000 square feet, geothermal HVAC, and outdoor classrooms. It was built for about 1,000 students, at a reported cost of roughly $35–36 million.
This is a neighborhood middle school first. JCPS lists it among Explore Pathways schools, not among districtwide magnets. Families in the Echo Trail resides area do not apply to get in unless they want a magnet somewhere else. The 2025 boundary change means some addresses that used to point here now point to Crosby for new sixth-graders.

Founding principal, still listed on the 2025–26 data book, the current homepage, and the staff directory. Assistant principals listed on school pages include Emily Rickert, Margot Smith, and K.C. Goodin. Rickert was later named a 2026 JCPS middle-school assistant principal of the year. Confirm names on the school site.

How families get in
If Echo Trail is still your resides middle school, you do not submit a magnet application. Fifth-graders already in JCPS are assigned automatically unless they live in a Choice Zone or apply somewhere else. Confirm the address in School Finder — the 2025 line is the one that matters.
- Magnet application is for other campuses. Echo Trail itself is not a districtwide magnet.
- Explore Pathways are for students who attend. Families do not apply separately for Explore.
- Student transfer is a different form and is not guaranteed. Transportation may not be provided.
- Buying a house 'for Echo Trail' is now a School Finder question, not a neighbor-memory question.
- 2026–27 magnet window (for other schools) was November 3–December 19, 2025. That window is closed.
Boundary change, approved November 18, 2025
- Echo Trail opened to relieve East End crowding and was over capacity within three years — about 117% of its 1,044-student capacity, and headed for 133% if nothing changed.
- The board voted to send incoming sixth-graders and new students living north of I-64 and west of Valhalla Golf Club to Crosby (then about 75% full) — about 90–100 new sixth-graders.
- Students already at Echo Trail stay. Parents objected; the vote was unanimous. A districtwide boundary review is still talked about for 2028–29.

Who it tends to fit
A good match when
- Echo Trail is still your resides school and you want a new building, outdoor classrooms, and Explore Pathways without a magnet lottery.
- An earlier start (7:30 a.m.) works for your household.
- You want a large 6–8 with many clubs and sports, and you can live with a crowded campus.
Think twice when
- Your address is now in the Crosby slice (north of I-64, west of Valhalla) and you were counting on Echo Trail for a new sixth-grader.
- You want a Traditional magnet culture or a smaller building that is under capacity.
- A 7:30 a.m. start plus an East End / Parklands commute does not work for your family.

- Those combined bands sit above typical JCPS middle-school averages. The 2025–26 school profile lists 2024–25 reading P+D at 54% and math at 46%, and a KDE indicator rating in the yellow/green neighborhood (score 3 of 5 on one snapshot).
- Gifted identification is high (304 students). Overcrowding can still flatten what a new building is supposed to feel like — ask how team sizes and related-arts actually work this year.

Location and daily life
Far East End, almost to the county line, across from the Parklands. Convenient if you already live in the Echo Trail / Floyds Fork corridor — a long haul from the West End or downtown.
The 7:30 a.m. start is earlier than Crosby (8:40) and most JCPS middle schools. Factor the drive and the bus, not only the architecture.
Recent news, in context
In October–November 2025, JCPS held meetings at Eastern High as it proposed the boundary shift. Parents said they felt blindsided; one fifth-grader told the board Echo Trail was 'the best school that I want.' The board approved the Crosby shift on November 18. Students already enrolled stay; new sixth-graders in the sliced area go to Crosby.
That is a capacity story, not a test-score story. The building is still new; the headcount is not. If you bought a house for this school, run School Finder again before sixth grade.
No published teacher-arrest story tied to Echo Trail turned up in the reporting for this guide. JCPS posts school-level suspension totals; those numbers move. Ask how the building handles hallway supervision and lunch when it is over listed capacity.
