Ramsey Middle School

East-county resides middle school and Verizon Innovative Learning School

Neighborhood 6–8 · Explore Pathways · Jeffersontown · Rams

  • Grades: 6th–8th
  • How to get in: Resides + Explore
  • School day: 7:30 a.m.–2:10 p.m.

Ramsey is a large east-county resides middle school next to Farmer Elementary, not a districtwide magnet. Most students attend because the address is assigned here. It is an Explore Pathways school and a Verizon Innovative Learning School. In 2025 the board changed the incoming-sixth-grade line because the building was over capacity. Students already at Ramsey were grandfathered. Confirm the address before you assume this is still your school. JCPS Insider is not affiliated with Jefferson County Public Schools.

What this school is

Ramsey sits on Gellhaus Lane in Jeffersontown, next door to Farmer Elementary. It is a neighborhood 6–8 first. Motto: Serve to Be Great. Mascot: Rams. Teams on the staff list include Discover (6th), Fusion (7th), and Ignite / Elevate (8th).

JCPS lists Ramsey among Explore Pathways schools. Healthcare work has been public — WDRB filmed mock clinics with fake patients. The campus is also a Verizon Innovative Learning School, which means district-issued Chromebooks with wireless service. Families do not apply separately for Explore or VILS.

Who runs the building

Katherine LaDuke

Katherine LaDuke is listed as principal on the JCPS staff directory. A 2024 WHAS story on bus delays quoted Principal Katie LaDuke. Confirm the name on the school site before you write a letter.

How families get in

If Ramsey is still your resides middle school, you do not submit a magnet application to attend. That sentence matters more here than at most schools in this series. In April 2025 the board moved some incoming sixth-grade addresses off Ramsey because the building was over capacity.

  • Explore Pathways are for students who already attend. Families do not apply separately for Explore.
  • Student transfer is a different form and is not guaranteed. Transportation may not be provided.
  • Magnet application is for other campuses. Ramsey itself is not a districtwide magnet.

2025–26 boundary change

  • Capacity was listed around 974. Enrollment had been over 1,100. Incoming sixth-graders near Wheeler Elementary were reassigned to Carrithers. Incoming sixth-graders near GE Appliance Park were reassigned to Newburg. Students already at Ramsey were not moved.
  • Run School Finder anyway — lines move.

The 2026–27 magnet window (for other schools) was November 3–December 19, 2025. That window is closed.

Who it tends to fit

A good match when

  • Ramsey is still your resides school after the 2025 line change, and you want Explore plus a large east-county campus next to Farmer Elementary.
  • Jeffersontown is already the commute.
  • A Chromebook-with-service campus matters in your house.

Think twice when

  • School Finder now sends you to Carrithers or Newburg. Do not fight an old map.
  • You want a small 6–8. This building has been over listed capacity.
  • State scores are the only filter — Ramsey sits mid-to-lower pack in this series.

Academics

Use the Kentucky School Report Card first. These bands are from the school banner figures.

  • Reading: 23% proficient, 13% distinguished. Math: 24% proficient, 5% distinguished. Combined P+D is about 36% reading and 29% math.
  • Those combined bands sit above Thomas Jefferson and below Crosby and Echo Trail in this series.
  • A large building over listed capacity is a crowding story first.
  • Ask how team sizes look after the 2025 line change, not only how the mock clinic photographs.

Recent news, in context

April 2025: the board approved a Ramsey boundary change for incoming sixth-graders only. Wheeler-area addresses went to Carrithers; Appliance Park addresses went to Newburg. Capacity was about 974 versus enrollment over 1,100.

Earlier WHAS reporting covered late buses and students arriving mid-morning — a transportation story, not a campus-safety one.

Fall 2025: Carrithers and Ramsey softball shared a roster so girls at both schools could play. Ask how arrival works if your bus runs late, and how crowded a team classroom feels after the line change. JCPS posts school-level suspension totals, and those numbers move.

Questions to ask on a tour

  1. 1.Is Ramsey still the resides school for my address after the 2025 line change?
  2. 2.How full is a typical team classroom this year versus 2024–25?
  3. 3.What does an Explore healthcare week look like if my child is not on that pathway?
  4. 4.Does the 7:30–2:10 day still hold, and how late do buses still run?
  5. 5.Which high school do most Ramsey eighth-graders enter?
  6. 6.How do Discover / Fusion / Ignite teams group students?
  7. 7.Can we see Farmer Elementary pickup and Ramsey arrival on the same visit?

What to do next

  1. 1.Run your address in School Finder. Do not use a pre-2025 neighborhood map.
  2. 2.If Ramsey is your resides school, register if you are new to JCPS. No magnet application is required.
  3. 3.If School Finder now lists Carrithers or Newburg, treat that as the assignment.
  4. 4.Tour if you can. Ask about class size and buses, not only the mock clinic.
  5. 5.Complete the Transportation Verification form if you need a bus.
  6. 6.If you are offered a different school, read the deadline on the letter.
