STLP is the Student Technology Leadership Program — a Kentucky program, K–12, where students build technology projects that can advance to regional and state showcases.

What STLP is

  • A Kentucky program open from kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • Students build technology projects and can advance to a regional showcase and then state.
  • Broader than coding: digital media, apps, video, design and other tech projects all count.

What STLP is not

  • Not computer class. A grade in a technology course is not STLP.
  • Not robotics.
  • Not a guaranteed state trip — advancing is not automatic.

Who runs it

A school STLP coordinator or teacher sponsor runs it.

Season and calendar

Year-round, with showcase deadlines during the year. Confirm the current year's dates with the school — the project work starts long before the showcase does.

How kids get on STLP

  • Ask who the school's STLP coordinator is, then ask that teacher directly.
  • Ask when projects start, not only when the showcase is.
  • Expect a more open door than a capped competition roster — but the school still decides.

A teacher or school sponsor runs the group. The district may coordinate a league or showcase, but it does not staff the team. Not every JCPS school offers this, and availability changes year to year — confirm at your child's school before you plan around it.

Who sponsors this at your child's school is a school question. Ask the front office, the counselor, or the teacher who runs the group. JCPS Insider does not keep a live sponsor list and cannot tell you who the coach is. Please do not email us to find a sponsor, meeting time, or roster.

Questions to ask the school

  1. Who is the STLP coordinator here?
  2. When and how often does the group meet?
  3. Is there a project requirement to stay in the group?
  4. Do students advance as a group or individually?
  5. What happens if my child's project does not advance?

Schools we have seen list STLP

This list is incomplete on purpose and is not a directory. We only list what we have actually seen a school publish, so a school missing here may still run the program — and a school listed here can drop it.

Still verifying. Tell us what your school offers so we can add it — that link is for adding a school, not for asking who the coordinator is. Browse the schools directory or tell us what your school offers.
