For a family new to Jefferson County Public Schools, the first thing that can hold up an application isn't the application. A child who has never attended a JCPS school has to be registered first, with proof of a Jefferson County address, and the district's Elementary School Choices and Middle School Choices pages say verifying that registration "can take up to two business days" before JCPS emails you the next step.

The 2027 to 2028 application window runs from November 2 through Friday, December 18, 2026, according to the district's Student Assignment page. We checked the Student Assignment, New Students, registration and application, Elementary School Choices and Middle School Choices pages on October 29, 2026.

Who has to register before applying?

Any child who has never attended a JCPS school, including every incoming kindergartner. The district's New Students page says those students "must register online, at any JCPS elementary school, or at the Office of School Choice." Current JCPS students skip that step and go straight to the application.

Registration isn't the application. After it's processed, the New Students page says, you get "an activation key" that opens the application for an elementary zone, a Choice Zone selection, or a magnet or Academies of Louisville program.

Register on December 17 and the key can come after the window closes.

What proof of address does JCPS accept?

JCPS posts two versions of the list. The New Students page accepts "an LG&E or water bill, a paycheck or paycheck stub, a lease, or SSI or other government benefit award letter."

The district's registration and application page is stricter about the details. It says proof "must show the parent/guardian's name, the address, and must be current (dated within the past 30 days)." Its list covers a current gas, electric or water bill, a lease, closing statement or other approved home document "signed by both parties," a current paycheck or stub, and government agency correspondence.

A lease only the landlord signed doesn't pass. Neither does a September gas bill brought in for a November registration.

If your family doesn't have a fixed, regular nighttime address, you can still register. The New Students page says registration doesn't depend on immigration status or housing, and a student living in a shelter, a motel or a relative's home "may qualify for the Office of Access and Opportunity." What if we moved after applying?

Update your address with JCPS, then recheck your options. The 2026 to 2027 High School Choices guide, the newest high school edition posted, says to "Update your address with JCPS online or in person" and then check SchoolFinder, because "A change of address could mean your student, if accepted, would have a different school assignment." Some magnet schools and Academies of Louisville programs have boundaries.

A move also changes what you have to file. The elementary page says a student who "has had a change of address" must apply, and the middle school page requires an application for a student with a new address in the Choice Zone.

Which magnets ask for more than the JCPS form?

Some do. The middle school page says some magnet programs "will ask for additional information as part of the application process, such as student work samples or test scores," and that "Applications will be considered incomplete if the requested information is not sent to a school." The high school guide says the same and tells families to send the material "directly to the school."

Here is what four schools posted when we checked their pages on October 29, 2026.

duPont Manual's admissions site calls its application a two step process. The JCPS magnet application comes first, then Manual's own online application, which asks for the person ID in the JCPS confirmation email. Both steps are due December 18, 2026. Manual's step includes magnet specific pieces such as the High School University essay of up to 400 words and an activities survey, plus two recommendations due January 5, 2027.

Central's Yellowjacket Applicants document asks for an essay, video or Google Site answering one of three prompts, uploaded to Central's Google Classroom, plus two recommendations and a personal profile form, all by December 18, 2026.

Brown's middle and high admissions page runs everything through the Brown School Admissions Form, which opens November 2: two teacher recommendations, plus grades and test scores for students who spent time outside JCPS in the current or prior school year.

Atherton's Applying to Atherton page says families who list Atherton IB first get an email with an Atherton application after the JCPS one is in. The page doesn't say what that form asks for. Call Atherton at 502 485 8202.

Each school sets its own extras and deadlines, not JCPS, and Manual's recommendations are due after the district window closes. If any piece doesn't reach the school, JCPS counts the application as incomplete.

Elementary magnet programs are different. The 2026 to 2027 Elementary Choices guide said no additional materials were required. Brown is the exception: its elementary admissions page still requires the Brown School Admissions Form, with Brown marked as first choice, by December 18, 2026.

Can I fix a mistake after I submit?

Yes, until the window closes. Both 2027 to 2028 Choices pages say magnet applications can be edited only during the application window.

JCPS says applications aren't processed first come, first served, and the Choices pages warn that "submitting false information will void an application." Families get one magnet application per student per year, with up to two magnet choices, and twins or triplets each need their own application.

What happens if it's late or never finished?

You lose priority, not your child's seat in school. The Student Assignment page says applications submitted after the deadline "will be processed based on building capacity and admission criteria." The elementary page says JCPS accepts late applications but space "may be limited," and the middle school page says Choice Zone selections are guaranteed only for applications that meet the deadline. The elementary page also says "JCPS guarantees every student a seat at a school in their zone," though not necessarily the first choice.

Which documents can wait until the school year?

Some paperwork belongs to enrollment, not the application. Kentucky's KRS 158.032 gives a family 30 days after a child first enrolls to provide a certified birth certificate, or other proof of identity and age with an affidavit. If it still isn't in, the school must send a 10 day written warning before referring the case to police.

Health forms run on their own clock. A JCPS August 18, 2026 announcement says every student needs a current immunization certificate on file "within two weeks of starting classes," and that new students ages 3 through 6 need an eye exam form, and 5 and 6 year olds a dental form, by January 1. The state's enrollment requirements page lists a preventive health exam within a year before first entry.

Who can check whether my application went through?

The Office of School Choice, at 502 485 6250 or jcpsschoolchoice@jefferson.kyschools.us. Magnet questions go to askoptionalmagnet@jefferson.kyschools.us. You can also apply in person at the office, 4309 Bishop Lane, or at any JCPS school, according to the Choices pages. To confirm your resides school or zone, call the Demographics Office at 502 485 3050 or use our find your resides school guide.

If your child is new to JCPS, register this week with a current bill or pay stub that shows your name and address and is dated within the past 30 days.
